What documents do you need to buy a used car as I've spoken
to a couple of used car places and they have given different
answers.
Thanks

Seller

Copies of:
NIF identity document Or if non Spanish: White NIE in date plus Passport OR Certificado de registro plus passport OR old style plastic residencia IF still in date.

Original Ficha Technica (car log Book) This Should have a current ITV stamp (MOT) with preferably at least 1 month's life left.
Original Permiso de Circulación matching the name of the documents above.
Original paid receipt of current rodaje (road tax) (advisable)

Since October 2010 in Tenerife the registered address of the owner of the vehicle no longer appears on the "Permiso de Circulación" document, it is therefore advisable to make sure for vehicles registered after that date that the vendor provides you with proof of his actual address for use in completing the Compra Venta and transfer documents. Alternatively request a vehicle check from Trafico before buying to double check ownership of second hand vehicles.

Buyer

NIF identity document Or if non Spanish: White NIE in date plus Passport OR certificado de registro plus passport OR old style plastic residencia IF still in date.

CURRENT certificate of empadronamiento from your local Council.

Both parties must sign a Compraventa (Bill of Sale) DO NOT enter a price – you must get a book price confirmed by the Hacienda (Spanish Inland Revenue) otherwise there may be tax issues later on.
Signed Trafico application to transfer. If not attending Trafico yourself a signed authority document for someone to act on buyer and seller's behalf.

Be ready to pay a transfer tax of 5.5% (2013) of the book value of the vehicle to the Hacienda plus 53 euros for Trafico fees plus consultants fees if you use one.

If a third party processes the application the ORIGINAL identity document of the Buyer is required to be shown as well as all of the above

An ITV is the Spanish equivalent of an MOT you can book an appointment on line (in English) here http://www.applusiteuve.com/esp/index_home.html

If I buy privately do I do the paperwork for the transfer or does the seller do it ?

How will I know if the transfer has been carried out correctly.

Thanks

If you buy privatley it will all depend on what's agreed. It is of course in the interest of the seller to ensure that a transfer is completed but beware as some people sell cars that are not in thier name or are not transferable as the paperwork is not in order.
Firstly DO NOT PART WITH ANY MONEY until you have had the car checked for debts( Motorworld can do this for you ) no matter how well you may know the person or whatever assurances you are given....... You may well find that the car is clear but if its not you may end up loosing a lot of money, and end up with a car that is worthless .
if you need any advice just contact me by PM

Always get a car credit checked should only be around the 20 euros mark if you pay for it done and could save you a lot of hassle,The paper work can be done by you or the seller check here (http://www.tenerifeforum.org/tenerife-forum/showthread.php?22563-Changing-names-over-on-a-car-in-Tenerife-is-very-easy-to-do) You can find all the paper work needed here (http://www.tenerifeforum.org/tenerife-forum/showthread.php?23095-Where-can-I-get-a-copy-of-a-car-contract-and-other-paper-work-to-take-to-trafico) Goldenmaniac is spot on with what you need to do but if your car is older then 10 year then its a one off payment the max is 115 euros to Hacienda, but it goes from 40, 70, and 115 euros depending on engine size then you pay 52.20 to trafico, but this part is just to changing names

Good luck

P.S Thanks for this Goldenmaniac this is hardy

Ok thanks for the tip of not giving over any money until the car has been checked out.

So it's not just as simple as making sure the car is running ok and in good condition you
also make sure your not buying a wreck or worse a wreck the has money outstanding on
it as well !

I have seen a car locally with a sign in the window and it looks in good condition. If
I spoke to the owner, tried the car and liked it do I just get the reg number and get it
checked out then pay him or what is the normal correct procedure for the purchase ?

Thanks

Good advice.

Always remember that the debt, including outstanding fines and taxes, remain with the item and not with the owner when the debt was incurred.

You buy a car and transfer it to yourself you also transfer any outstanding debt too.

It's a pain buying a car here but it well be worth it in the end if you live here you we have done NIF identity document Or if non Spanish: White NIE in date plus Passport OR certificado de registro plus passport OR old style plastic residencia IF still in date.CURRENT certificate of empadronamiento from your local Council.anyway so its just a matter of getting in your name changed, if you do it yourself you will need copies of everything for both Hacienda and Trafico some times their take them some time not be its worth having them or you can pay some to do it all for you which will be around 50 to 100 euros + the tax's for the car.

Good luck
