Hi, we are planning a short break to La Gomera and La Palma this month. Staying for 2 nights in each and bringing our 1 year old and a car. We would love some recommendations for places to stay and nice places to eat and visit. We don't mind hotel/B+B or country house/apartment.
Any advice???

I'm sure cainaries will come along and give you some ideas for La Palma, but until she does, we stayed in Tazacorte. Did not find a bad restaurant. Make sure you drive up to Roque de los Muchachos for the view and take your little one to the zoo and maybe Acropark. You can also visit Teneguia too.

see my thread on our holiday : http://www.tenerifeforum.org/tenerife-forum/showthread.php?19534-My-review-on-our-recent-holiday-in-La-Palma-Canarias

Thanks for the kind mention, KJ.

Well, it's almond blossom time here on La Palma so very pretty. Drive up round the north of the island to Puntagorda and beyond for the best of the blossom. However, the almond blossom fiesta is today so if you are not planning to come until the end of the month, that will make a difference.

Carnaval started today! The biggest Festival will be on Monday 11th in Santa Cruz de la Palma starting around 18.00 hours. This is viewed as one of the 'world class' Carnaval processions (althrough I have no idea who makes these judgements). Whether or not a one-year old would appreciate it I have no idea. Here on La Palma they throw talcum powder at everyone all through Carnaval. You have been warned. Anyone obviously foreign probably earns the thrower bonus points. Accommodation might be more difficult to come by over that weekend as people come from the other Canary Islands to enjoy the fiesta on the Monday ... called 'los Indianos'.

I don't know of anywhere to stay for 2 nights offhand as most people come for a week or more. If I hear of something, I'll send you a PM. Enjoy your holiday here. (2 nights is nowhere near enough, imo, but I would say that, wouldn't I?)

The place where we stayed was nice enough, and can be booked via Booking.com (http://go.redirectingat.com/?id=31809X894192&site=tenerifeforum.org&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.booking.com%2Fhotel%2Fes%2Fa partamentos-isa.en-us.html%3Faid%3D342524&xguid=e00a99652ba007f6fe04bea4f05bb0c2&xcreo=0&sref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tenerifeforum.org%2Ftenerife-forum%2Fshowthread.php%3F19534-My-review-on-our-recent-holiday-in-La-Palma-Canarias&pref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.tenerifeforum.org%2Ftenerife-forum%2Fsearch.php%3Fsearchid%3D2067746) without need for a deposit. :) Tazacorte had a great beach for the kids and to be honest, nowhere in La Palma is usually more than 20 mins away by car! It's really quick to get around.

I mentioned this thread to OH who suggested trying the Hacienda San Jorge on the east side, right by the resort beach of Los Cancajos and a short trip to the capital. Best to leave the car behind and hop on the bus or in a taxi rather than waste an hour of a short holiday trying to find a parking space. OP can take her car to travel to everywhere else. We've spent several holidays at this hotel and it is excellent.

sorry for long link but if you google hacienda san jorge the booking.com link is the first one to come up.

If you do stay there (or even if you don't) the 'El Pulpo' restaurant on the beach is fantastic for fish. It might look like a shack but don't be put off by that. There is another restaurant not that far away, just past the airport called Casa Goyo. Also really good for fresh fish.

I'm getting carried away now. Almost everyone I know would tell you best restaurant on the island is called the 'Azul' but it is only open on Saturdays and Sundays and you have to book.

Hi zoezoe,

Just back from a fantastic week in La Palma. I'd second KirstyJay that Roque de los Muchachos is a must on a clear day and Tazacorte is smashing little place. There are a few cracking surprises if you wander the colourful back streets of the town - you'll do very well if you find the cunningly hidden La Tasquita for drinks and great value food. A couple of miles down the road at Puerto de Tazacorte there are a few restaurants right at the end that look like they're worth a go.

The only place I know of to stay in Tazacorte is Apartmentos Isa:

Not great (reception is hardly ever open), but quite cheap. Worth paying the bit extra for a balcony with sea view room as that's the best side of the hotel. Check out the roof pool as well and the parrot who owns the huge house across road all to himself - you can talk to him from the balconies on that side.

The main old high street of Santa Cruz is picture-postcard and shouldn't be missed - cainaries is the main knowledge for all things La Palma and knows her stuff very well.

Have a great time

Steve

The ones without, are quite frankly awful, so pay the extra.

We spent a lot of time talking to that parrot. :D

I'm going to have to send OH down to check this parrot out! He loves parrots!

Hope you have a wonderful time. I think Carnaval will just about be over by then. The drums are still going tonight.
