Hi all,
Could someone please provide me with a little more info what wikipedia provides other than global info. I am heavily into photography and i would like to go and photograph this flower known by many names - Echium wildpretii, tower of jewels, Mount Teide bugloss, Tajinaste Rojo - flower.
From internet research i understand it is in the area of Las Caņadas del Teide, however this is a large expanse area. Does anyone have a favourite spot or place they know for areas where this flower is available? It is also a biennial plant and flowers late spring, has anyone seen this happening yet or is it too early? I am hoping to capture the plant mid march if i am successful in finding some. Depending on the result of this topic i will next enquire about Almond trees and where best to photograph them next so if anyone has double the info it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Once I was up to photograph the red tajinaste on 1st June and you can see the area where it is to be found on my blog link. (http://tenerifejournal.blogspot.com.es/2009/03/28-driving-up-teide.html).

Not sure if it is flowering in March but I think it may be seen in April. It also grows in planters on the streets of Vilaflor (http://canarybird.smugmug.com/Landscapes/Vilaflor-Teide-June-2009-1/i-sGxGMBS/0/L/P6023823-L.jpg).

I found Echium Simplex, (http://tenerifejournal.blogspot.com.es/2012/03/white-tajinaste.html) or white tajinaste blooming at end of February in the streets of Puerto de la Crus and in gardens.

I'll look around and see if I can give you more info on the dates the red tajinaste begins to bloom and for sure someone else will come on here and let you know their experiences as well.

I know people who are going up to see the almond blossoms right now, as February is the time they bloom.

Later:

I've just found a very good blog page (http://mundani-garden.blogspot.com.es/2011/05/tajinaste-rojo-blood-of-teide.html) about the red tajinaste written by JUAN BIBILONI who says he has seen it starting to bloom around May 10 and includes photos of the early stages of flower development.

And the almond blossoms can be seen from end of January to mid February around Santiago del Teide,
Here's a link (http://www.tenerifeoutdoors.com/tenerife-almond-blossom.asp) about them.

Hi Zeus.
I have taken many photos of this flowering plant and May seems to be a good time.
It is very tall and the advice is not to get too close as the nectar is much loved by bees. At the moment you can see where they flowered as they leave a fluffy white skeleton once the petals are shed.
You will find them below the Roques de Garcia and all along either side of the road heading away from the cable car area to the visitor's centre.
There are some particularly good examples outside the visitors centre and at most of the viewing areas. I really like the spiral flower formations.
I have seen them in lower regions of the island but they are more scarce and need supports if grown domestically.
