I have the new credit card sized residencia which is a bit flimsy. At the moment I keep it in a bus ticket holder in my purse but I wondered if it is allowed to have it laminated. Thanks

No but make a perfect copy, laminate that to use for day to day use thereby reducing the amount of possible damage.

Are you sure a perfect copy isn't actually fraud.
Depending on the size you may be able to get a clear plastic covering for it in any paper supplies shop

The views of what constitute fraud are many and complex. However I,ve always taken the view that so long as no attempt to pass off the copy as an original then fraud is not being committed. Personal opinion.

I have the A4 sheet Residencia which I got a copy made, reduced to a suitable size and laminated, to carry around in my wallet. It is always accepted as proof of my NIF number.

It is not illegal to laminate your original, but it does invalidate it.
