Long-time and well-respected President of the Tenerife Cabildo and Coalicion Canaria, (CC), Ricardo Melchior, has publicly announced that he will step down before the end of the current term, saying, “I would like Carlos Alonso to be my successor”. Melchior has been President of the Tenerife Cabildo since 1999.
However, there still remains much to be revealed. Speaking to reporters after the press conference, Melchior said he has not yet decided the date of his departure, but remarked that it will be “at least” a few months before the next election.
Ricardo Melchior expressed his amazement at the reaction of many observers, saying, “Why the big surprise?
“The parties must be renewed, especially in the case of those who have been in their positions for a long time. And the changes should not occur the day before the elections, because the people would only be confused,” he said.
“If you know you will not continue in your position, you must give way and step aside at least a few months before, out of respect for the people”.
Melchior added that his successor, Vice President and Tourism Chief Carlos Alonso, is an “extraordinary politician” that meets “all the necessary profiles” and added, “People have to know that there is a serious, good and hopeful alternative,” he said.
The general secretary of the CC, Fernando Clavijo said Melchior is an “important asset” for his party and a politician who “walks the walk”.
Melchior’s announcement coincided with him celebrating his 66th birthday last Monday
