On the 11th March 2013 the Olympic Torch will be arriving in Tenerife for a tour of five schools in Guía de Isora,Tenerife.
This has all been made possible thanks to Muriel Brown, 81, who has agreed to bring the torch that she carried as part of the Kexborough leg of the torch relay back in June 2012 to Tenerife for her great-granddaughters to show to their friends at school.
Muriel is an ex-World record holder for the over 50’s 10k run in 1983 and has numerous other achievements under her belt in the world of athletics. She was also a torchbearer as part of the Commonwealth Games inManchesterin 2002.
Muriel’s granddaughter, Kirsty Wood, has lived inTenerife12 years, and was working as an English Conversation Assistant in two public schools in Guía de Isora for 5 years as part of the Auxiliares de Conversación project which was halted two years ago by the Consejería de Educación. Because of her connections with the local schools in the municipality, she thought that it would be a great
opportunity to bring the torch to as many children as possible during its 11-day stay inTenerife. After talking to the five biggest schools in the municipality, the torch will now be doing a tour of CEIP Teobaldo
Power, CEIP Almácigo, CEIP Adoración, CEIP La Era and CEIP Chigora giving around 2000 children to opportunity to
see and hold a real Olympic torch. It will be accompanied by a presentation, question and answer session and a
short quiz on the history of the torch, the history of the Olympics andSpainand the Canaries’ achievements in the London 2012 Olympics.
Kirsty, who is a CELTA qualified TEFL teacher, now gives private classes in the Forum 4 Academy in Guía de Isora along with her partner,
Gordon, who is also an ex-conversation assistant, and she has also set up a new academy alongside her French colleague, Muriel Nadal, giving private language classes in English, French and Spanish in Playa San Juan. If you would like to see the torch, it will available
by appointment only during afternoon opening hours (usually 16:00h to 19:00h) at the new language academy, Isla Idiomas, in Calle Isla
Bonita Nº39, Playa San Juan. To call ahead for information, phone 922 13.83.22
