WIGAN Athletic’s training week at Costa Adeje’s Tenerife Top Training (T3) camp, was hailed a “great success” by manager Roberto Martinez.
It certainly proved so, and not even pictures of players by their hotel swimming pool, which upset fans after being posted on Twitter, could detract from the benefit of their warm-weather training.
Despite their tense battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League, Wigan showed a touch of class after returning home last Thursday with a 4-1 win atHuddersfieldon Sunday to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.
They now play Everton or Oldham next month for a semi-final place, but ahead of that, there’s a vital relegation clash tomorrow (Saturday) atReading, who are just above them in the danger zone.
But all that seemed far away as they settled in to their five-day stay over here, which included intense work-outs against the idyllic backdrop ofMountTeide.
The squad were given the warmest of receptions at their hotel – and top-class facilities were made available, which allowed them to continue working away from the T3 playing field.
Manager Martinez said: “From the first day we arrived, we were made to feel extremely welcome, and the local hospitality was incredible.
“We couldn’t have wished for a better environment in which to prepare for the most important stage of our season.
“Our players benefited immensely from the facilities and surroundings, taking in extra Vitamin D from the fantastic weather, and completing more minutes on the training pitch, thanks to the conditions.
“Overall, it was a great success, and a period in our season that has prepared our team for what is to come in a way no other week could have done.”
