 hello, please advise. We are going to the santa barbara soon and have not stayed at a hotel for ages. Whats the situation when they show you to your room. Do you tip and if so how much?

My son and his family stay there twice a year. I am pretty sure they don't tip at all. The two porters who show you to your room are both lovely and seem happy just to help.

I would think that one Euro per person for his help in carrying up your luggage and escorting you into your room, showing you the lights etc would be about the right amount to tip.

My advice when staying in any good hotel, Tip very generously on arrival,,Bell boys, Head waiters, Pool Guys,Concierge, : Don't wait till you leave its wasted, unless you go back often.

I always tip 10% in bars and restaurants but I know it's too much! I have seen the Spanish/Canarian leave a table after eating a meal with just a few cents left as a tip! :)

Couldn't agree more with Marbro8

1st time we stayed AI we didn't tip (thought it was included) and we struggled like everyone else.
2nd time, I tipped the barman first night and as said previously, I got the quickest service (drinks usually already on the bar as I walked up!) largest measures and utmost attention for the whole holiday - I did tip everyday to be fair, but it made a huge difference compared to the service others were getting!

Yes as I've spent most of my life in Spain I guess I tip more like the locals do.

Also my experience staying in hotels is limited to brief overnight stops in transit during long haul flights.

I've never spent a holiday in a hotel, so I'm not accustomed to tipping a porter for more than carrying my bags upstairs and then back down again the next morning.

In London I give £1.00 when I arrive and the next morning if the porter puts the bag on the hotel bus for me as well, I give him £2.00.

Eating out locally here with longtime resident girlfriends we give one Euro each as tip for a restaurant dinner out.

But we're not expensive eaters....usually works out to twelve to fourteen Euros each for a special meal out. :)

I no longer tip regardless, some restuarant prices are way over the top. but if I use a bar regularly I will give staff a euro here and there as when I use pubs in Uk I will ask any pleasant staff if they would like a drink and don't mind if they take a reasonable amount in lieu. I don't think the Spanish are great tippers from my observations.

I want a job at a hotel where you visit €15 tip for carrying a case to your room, not to be to greedy.....
15 customers a day and you have a nice little earner of over €1500 a week plus wages.

Now I know why all hotel porters stay at the Ritz!!

I have seen in Tenerife zero tips and even 10 cents for a 3 course meal !
I personally have not tipped in Venice for atrocious DGAF service and have been threatened with violence!
In the Caribbean they wanted 5 Dollars for lifting your case from sidewalk into boot of Taxi!
Try not tipping in a bar in New York!
You are not allowed to tip in Iceland, the country !

You are not allowed to tip in Iceland, the country !we where in florida a few years ago, and as we sat at the table a family was just leaving, their waiter came across to pick the money up, as he counted it he threw some coins across the room as he was saying "f*****g s**te":wow: needless to say we left a large tip;), we always leave a good tip wherever we go, but it does pee me off sometimes like last week, we went out and as i was paying for the drinks i asked the lad if he and his fellow barman would like a drink? he said yes please and i thought a couple of halves, no! two pints of old speckled hen at £3.50 a pint:wow:

The USA is probably the worst in the world for expecting tips. And real aggression if you dont play ball

I always leave a tip but wonder why? They get a wage for what they do Taxi drivers charge you the going rate so why pay extra, don't know how tipping started but it's time it was stopped, why leave a tip for somebody serving you a drink, you don't tip the girl on the checkout at Mercadona.Think i am just being mean cause i am listening to Rovers and they are getting beat.:devil2:

I remember when we used to tip the gas station attendant two pesetas for filling the gas tank.
Then they used to automatically wash your windscreen and two pesetas was considered a good tip.

But I also wonder why it is customary to tip people in certain employments while not tipping others.
If people are in a service job one would think they are expected to do their work properly without needing a bribe to make them do so.

But I won't start as this subject can be a can of worms.
