Can anyone recommend the best place to buy a new bed and mattress either in the north or south.

Ikea. You can mix and match the bed frame with the mattress. Also try the feel of the mattress' which are on display before you buy.

Not sure where you are located but if you are in the South then I'd say there is no need to go to the North with the probable delivery costs. Most multi branch stores (not IKEA) can be found at Las Chafiras and there are loads of furniture shops there - just drive around and find the price/quality that suits you.
