THIS week the President of the Tenerife Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior, met with the British Ambassador toSpain, Giles Paxman and Consul to the Canaries, Stephen Paul Jones. The meeting was used to analyse, among other issues, the situation of tourism in the island.
Melchior stressed the “special relationship” of the English and recalling thatTenerifeis the main winter tourist destination of British tourists, and stressed his loyalty, as “great, most visit the island on more than one occasion.”
Melchior highlighted the positive effect of the English market, the leader ahead of the Spanish and Germans, in 2012 with over a million and a half of British tourists visiting.
Meanwhile, Giles Paxman and Stephen Jones were interested in the projects being undertaken by the Cabildo among which the ALIX initiative, which aims to turn the island into a major center of the global telecommunications network through the development of Internet access or neutral NAP of West Africa-Canary Islands, Insular Ring Communications and Project CanaLink.
It was also noted that the work of the Cabildo and Tenerife Tourism has allowed, among other things, that the company British Airways will begin a five times weeklyReinaSofiaAirporttoLondonGatwickAirportfligh t from April this year. This flight will have 25 business class seats, an offer that will favour the arrival of affluent travellers to the island.
In addition the British Ambassador toSpain, Giles Paxman, met with Canaries President, Paulino Rivero. Paxman stressed at the meeting that the Canaries has “a good chance” to internationalise its economy.Britainhas “historic ties” with the archipelago that date back to the eighteenth century
