THE Tenerife Cabildo has launched a new campaign to control the rodent population aiming to “reduce the harmful effects that farming activities cause, and thus increasing the rat populations on the island,” said the island councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, José Joaquín Bethencourt.
This initiative, which has a budget of 42,000 euros, includes the provision of a total of 10,000 kilos of rodenticide product of which already 4,500 kilos has been distributed, while the rest will be delivered in June.
Municipalities have also received their first batch of 1,000 bait traps and in a few months will receive more if necessary.
These traps are located and controlled to prevent accidental poisoning of domestic or wild animals. José Joaquín Bethencourt indicated that in this campaign, “we wanted to have an impact especially in training municipal staff who will take care applying the product to optimise its distribution and maximum efficiency.”
