THE Facebook campaign Date tiempo para ser papá (Give yourself time to be a parent) on Tuesday – Father’s Day – gave mums and dads a timely reminder.
It told them that parents were “among the best playmates for their children”, and it followed new research by the Child’s Play Observatory (OJI) which claimed that 70%.of parents in Spain say they do not have time to play with them.
Children actually spend just 10% of their time with mum and dad. yet 60% of them pester parents to join in with their games, and they prefer the company of their family to that of their friends.
But this 10% of time translates to two hours a day of undivided attention, even though the OJI still believes kids need more.
Their research shows that the average 21st-Century child spends most of the day in the company of his or her teachers, 20% of the day with mum and 10% with dad.
But grandparents feature strongly in their lives, since the kids spend up to one-quarter of their day with them.
The OJI feels that by playing with their parents, children learn correct behaviour, how to follow rules, where the boundaries are and how to have fun. In the process, they strengthen the emotional ties with the most important people in their lives.
“Playing with your children is not a waste of time,” say the researchers. “Children need to play in order to grow and develop, and parents are an important figure in this development.”
