RESIDENTS of El Puertito appear to be winning their battle against the illegal influx of motor homes and campers in their tiny fishing village on the coast of Adeje.
The villagers – just 53 in all – have complained for years about the interlopers and now, Adeje Council and the Local Police are putting their foot down over the Easter holidays by bringing in the bulldozers!
Environment Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas said: “Ourmain concern is the care of the environment and the friendly spirit of the neighbourhood, which is being jeopardised by these people, especially during holiday periods.
“It is a sensitive area of the municipality and they cause great inconvenience to the residents, especially as there are no services to accommodate the so-called tourists.”
She added: “There is also the matter of security issues because El Puertito is a very small area of Adeje, which is accessed by a very narrow road, on which ambulances have struggled in the past to gain entrance.”
The beach there, although complying with health and safety regulations, lacks the amenities found in other coastal beaches, which have camping concessions.
As well as bulldozing the vacant lot close to the beach to deter the outsiders, Adeje Council has also placed signs strictly banning motorhomes and tents from getting established there.
In addition, an authorised parking area for cars has been marked out and, said Cllr Esther Rivero: “The Local Police have agreed to respond quickly to any complaints, and offenders will be sanctioned and dealt with rapidly.”
Despite previous interventions by Adeje Council in El Puertito, the holiday onslaught has continued to grow by the year,
“Residents have always complained about the mobile caravans at every meeting we have had with them,” said the Councillor. “We believe that as Adeje’s public administration, we should try to resolve the problem with all the means at our disposal.”
