THE Guardia Civil have arrested a man in Tenerife this week wanted on drug-trafficking charges in the USA.
The Colombian national, John Mauricio Z.F, 33 was arrested under an international warrant, issued in New York, following a stake-out in Calle Viera y Clavijo in the municipality of Adeje, which eventually led to his arrest.
The accused is wanted in connection with a drug-smuggling operation used to ferry large quantities of drugs between El Dorado International Airport in Bogota to New York and Miami.
He apparently knew the authorities in America were on to him and so tried to ‘disappear’ in Tenerife in an area of the island with a large South-American population.
Police believe he may have been in hiding in Tenerife for as long as six months.
Following a court appearance, he was ordered to be remanded in custody pending his extradition to the United States.
The arrest was part of a large police operation carried out in Colombia,Spain and Panama, as a result the authorities have dismantled two criminal organisations involved in sending consignments of heroin from Colombia to New York. In the course of the operations fourteen people in total were arrested, twelve in Colombia, one in Panama and one in Tenerife.
