THE Tax Office (Hacienda) expects this year to receive nearly 20 million tax returns under the current income tax campaign which began this week.
The tax returns relate to the past year 2012, but the estimated number of returns is similar to that of 2011.
It’s estimated that nearly 15 million of those submitted will receive some rebate amounting to 10,665 million euros, representing a decrease of 4.5% compared to the previous year.
The Secretary of State for Finance, Miguel Ferre, explained that both the decline in tax returns and the amount owed as a result of the tax increase which came into force last year will all play a part.
The tax return process runs from now until the 1st July.
The director of the Tax Office, Beatriz Viana, highlighted in a press conference that on the opening day for returns, Tuesday, a total of 40,956 taxpayers had already submitted their details, in the first hour.
By the close of business on Tuesday the Treasury had confirmed 151,502 drafts of the 2012 income tax return. These figures exceed those of 2011.
To avoid saturation problems similar to those that occurred a year ago, the AEAT (tax office) have increased by 40% the processing capacity of their computer system, during the first few days of the campaign.
The first leg of the campaign, which started on Tuesday, allows taxpayers who wish to obtain the draft of their fiscal data through the web. A number of individuals who have requested it will receive their information by post
