THE jobless figures for mainland Spain and the Canary Islands make for more grim reading this month – and there appears to be no respite in sight.
Spain’s unemployed total has hit a record six million-plus, which means 27.6% of the entire nation are on the dole.
And Canarian statistics show there was an increase of 17,200 people out of work during the first quarter of the year.
It means 4.68% more people were idle during this period, bringing the total number of jobless in the islands to 385,200, which is 34.27% of the population, compared with the 27.16% national average.
The huge number gives the Canaries the third-highest unemployment record in Spain.
Andalucia is top with 36.87%, followed by Extremadura at 35.56% and then the Canary Islands.
Throughout the whole of Spain, the jobless tally increased by 237,400 in the first quarter of 2013, reaching 6,202,700 people – an increase of 1.14% compared with the last quarter of 2012.
