Today, Friday there will be a controlled burn in the pine forest in the area of El Tanque. The event will take place in the vicinity of San Jose de Los Llanos.
Operated by the forest brigade, Brifor, the controlled burn will take place in order to create a fire protection strip. The objective of this activity is to remove the scrub and dry vegetation beneath the pines to avoid fire spreading incase a forest fire did break out in the summer.
These tasks are carried out by skilled individuals and in very specific weather conditions to prevent flames from damaging the trees.
Prescribed burning can produce a large amount of white smoke due to the high humidity of the forest residues and the public may confuse it with a real fire in the pine forest. But, residents should not be alarmed.
Last year 2012, Brifor monitored over 1,700 agricultural and forestry burns of which 60 were their own work, forest infrastructure and maintenance.
