You don't say if you had a job before this one or how many part time hours you are working, what age you are, whether you have children, if you can get documentary evidence of previous contributions made in the UK for example (U1 form) - all of which have a bearing on things.
If you read Spanish have a look here http://www.sepe.es/contenido/prestaciones/ag00a03.html. The important thing is to register as job seeking no longer than 15 days after you have been let go, they will then look into your situation and let you know what (if anything) you may be entitled to.

I was unemployed for 18 months, previous employers left island, although I had paid social for 4 years did not get anything because, previous employers would not sign forms for me.
At the moment I am contracted to work 10 hours a week.

I am 60, with no dependent family.

At 10 hours it is most likely not enough to get a contributory benefit.

But It's possible that you may be able to claim an over 55 non contributory subsidy (you may need proof of contributions paid in the UK to help "top up" your contributions - this is done by getting a U1 and a E301 - see info here https://www.gov.uk/claiming-benefits-move-travel-abroad and see application form here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/2005/ca3916.pdf),

If an employer will not give you paperwork you must still register as job seeking within 15 days and then if necessary take legal advise to get final documentation from the employer.

But you must enquire at the INEM office to be sure of your entitlement for YOUR situation - if you are in Torviscas you should go to Los Cristianos.

Could he not get a "Vida Laboral" by d/l from the net or has this practice stopped now?

Yes you can still get vida laborales - but in the circumstances described it has little bearing - INEM/SEPE already know exactly what contributions have been made - it's on their system. Calculating full time equivalents yourself isn't always helpful because the rules are complicated when U1's are involved - ie whether part of the other contributions were made as self employed. Plus the O/P mentions previous unemployment (possibly not registered as job seeking)
This is one of the reasons I can't possibly give blanket answers on the forum.
They are really helpful at INEM and it really is the best way to go and ask about specific cases, but there is no harm in applying for the U1 ahead of time, it can't hurt and it could help a lot.

Thanks for the help. Will I need to take a translator with me when I go to Los Cristianos ? I do speak a little spanish but not enough for the medical centre in Adeje, anyway. If so does anyone know of any translators that could help.

A friend of mine has been working for a company for the past 3 years. He is on a 20 hours P.W contract, although he usually does about 35 hours P.W. Recently, his hours have dropped to the official rate of about 20 P.W, and he is thinking of leaving to find something new.

He has been told that he wont be entitled to paro if he just leaves of his own accord. I think that's correct, but can anyone confirm this please?

Hypothetically, if he took a temporary job that he knows will only last 3 months, would he be entitled to paro when this temporary job finishes. I'm asking this as he has been told by someone that runs a bar that they would be willing to give him a three month contract and then 'lay him off'. They've told him he will than be able to claim paro until he finds another job. I can't see this being right, but does anyone know if the info he's been given is correct?

if you voluntarily leave a position you do not get unemployment benefit.
If he were employed in a new position and then let go or contract not renewed he would be able to apply for unemployment - but be careful because at 20 hours in the previous job and with the new job being possibly also part time he may not have enough entitlement "in the pot" and even if he does the paro will be pro -rata to the part time wage being officially earnt.
As I explained above there are other possibilities involving showing qualifying periods in UK for example and there are non contributary benefits available for certain age groups and family circumstances
If you read Spanish there is a benefits simulator here https://sede.sepe.gob.es/dgsimulador/introSimulador.do

Since this thread was started appointments are now compulsory and being late in presenting because there wasn't an appintment available is NOT grounds for an extension so be careful!
First you need this one https://sede.gobcan.es/empleo/sce/cita_previa to register as job seeking and then this one https://sede.sepe.gob.es/citaprevia/solicitudCitaPrevia.do to make your claim for Paro - enter your Postcode and NIE number
