A war of words and recriminations has broken out following the brutal murder of Jennifer Mills-Westley in Los Cristianos on Friday, May 13th.

This is raging independently of her family who say all the speculation and stories in the press throughout Spain and the UK have added to their grief as they try to deal with the awful circumstances.

However, Jennifer, who was 60, was murdered in the most terrible way and it has opened the floodgates about issues such as, could it have been avoided, could it happen again, why was a man with a mental health problem out on the streets, and the sale of knives in shops.

On the day of the murder, Jennifer had been stalked by Deyan Deyanov, a 28 year old Bulgarian vagrant whom, it has been confirmed, had spent time in a mental institution last summer in Wales, before moving to Tenerife.

She was repeatedly stabbed in a Los Cristianos Chinese shop at the Valdes shopping centre and then beheaded. Her attacker, who proclaimed he was God, then paraded the streets of Los Cristianos, in full view of tourists and local residents, carrying her head. He was eventually captured by passers-by when a sharp-thinking Italian man floored him with his crash helmet.

Tributes have been flooding in for Jennifer both here and back in Britain where she was described as a wonderful person, full of life and generous of heart who loved her life in the sun and also in France. She had two daughters and five grand-children.

Back here in Tenerife, the awful crime continues to make the headlines each day as more revelations are made about the accused man. He is now in a secure unit in Candelaria but questions are being asked about how he was allowed to roam the streets following a string of earlier complaints and warnings about his erratic behaviour.

Police have also confirmed that in February, they filed a report saying he was dangerous following three or four incidents. In one of these, he had punched a man full in the face, breaking four of his teeth, after asking him the time. He was sent to a pyschiatric unit for a short while but had returned to Los Cristianos to live in a squat.

Spanish press reports are still full of the arguments raging between the police and Arona council. In the latest development, the Spanish Confederation of Police claims Arona is trying to elude responsibility because the municipality should have known about the defendantīs history and taken action. The Confederation says Arona has the power to commit such people into a pyschiatric unit.

However, Arona says the tragedy, though terrible and a nightmare, could have happened anywhere else in the world and it had to be regarded as an isolated case.
The atrocious murder has also turned the spotlight on the plight of the homeless and whether it could happen again. Some traders have told the Spanish press that there are other vagrants living rough in the same tourist area of Los Cristianos and they consider at least one of them to be potential risk.

Questions are also being asked about the man's stay in the pyschiatric unit in Wales and the circumstances under which he was released. There have been calls for an urgent review of protocol.

Jennifer's family have apparently praised the police and those who have helped them, including the Foreign Office and say they hope justice will be done. There were prayers for her on both sides of the Atlantic during church services.
