I have been looking to buy a Kindle or Nook to be able to read my books,I have a tablet at the moment but can only use it inside. I tried to buy an e-reader from Amazon and they said it could not be sent to my address in tenerife. I
have been reading about only being able to get access to books and only being able to download books if you live in the UK or US.
What do other ex-pats do ?

I don't know anything about these but I can't imagine that the above is true given the quantity that are available through Mediamarkt (http://www.mediamarkt.es/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/MultiChannelSearch?storeId=19601&langId=-5&searchProfile=onlineshop&query=kindle)

and also El Corte Ingles (http://www.elcorteingles.es/tienda/commons/search/globalSearch.jsp?urlReturn=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.elcort eingles.es&question=kindle&Text1=)

... interestingly enough, there's no Kindle

If you have an Amazon kindle nd live here you cannot buy from the amazon kindle .uk store only fromthe .com which is America so books are different.Only way around this is to register the account at a UK address and purchase witha UK Card registered to a UK address.A UK card but registered to an address here will refer you to the .com site

Argos are selling the Barnes and Noble Nook Simple Touch for £29... It uses ePub format which is readily available from all other ebook sites other than Amazon. Might be worth considering? Maybe 'someone' coming to Tenerife from the UK could bring one to you? :D

I'm surprised you can"t download an ereader onto your tablet , there are plenty about .
You can download plenty of books free from torrent sites such as Kat.ph and load them into your reader.
You can loader Kindle app onto iPad and use it like a Kindle .
Not impressed with Kindle as I bought one and screen failed , a small fortune to repair !.

The problem with using a tablet as a reader is that the screen is not really any good for reading outside due to the glare.. Also, tablets are generally heavier than ereaders..

Yes Karingal , but the rate of failure of Kindle screens is atrocious ! £150 down the drain after a year!

Don,t know if you are au fait with Barnes & Noble but they have announced that they are getting out of the ereader/tablet business as they have done their money trying to compete with Google etc. So, although all of their gear is being heavily discounted (much more in the US than Eu) now be aware that they will not be sorting out any issues or repairing their equipment. Personally if you wanted a Nook I,d take the chance but be advised! The other thing is that Eu. newspapers/mags. are very limited again as opposed to the US.

For ANY book (I got Dan Brown: Inferno within a day of release!) download MIRC (for Windows) or X Chat (for Mac) add server irc.irchighway.net and join channel ebooks. Books available in any format and I yet to fail to find what I want. For anyone not very I.T. minded there are tutorials on using IRC. Just Google it. It's worth learning and will save you a fortune.

If you want me to, I'd be happy to oblige. Is it the Simple Touch @ £29.99 or the Simple Touch GlowLight @ £69.99?

I bought my Kindle in the UK and I put a Spanish adapter on its 3pin plug when I need to power up the battery. I can download anything on it from the UK and the US. I live here and travel everywhere with it. Get the latest one with a better light in the background, one you can read at night in bed.

The simple touch @ 29-99 pounds would be fine thanks.

Be careful. The makers ( Barnes & Noble) have now stopped producing these. As unable to compete. So future support may be iffy.

I've been using the Kindle app on my IPad and downloading from Amazon USA. So far have been happy with that but haven't tried to read outside in the sun. Read mostly on the sofa evenings when there's nothing good on TV. Perhaps will buy a kindle one day if I change my habits and need it.

I'm using a Kindle Paperwhite with 3G and WiFi. It's fantastic in the sun and at night with it's (built-in and variable) illuminated screen. I can sincerely recommend it to anyone.

I also download onto my I Pad Kindle but of course would be a problem in sun to read. I download from Amazon UK.

I had a Kindle Touch which was good , I sold it on EBay (got £56 for it) then upgraded to a Paperwhite which is even better. I too would recommend a Paperwhite

Can't you buy a kindle in tenerife in worten

Welcome to the forum. I think this thread has been running for a while now so the OP has probably bought two kindles since they started it. I live on La Palma and even I managed to buy a kindle in Worten here on the island. But the situation in 2015 is very different from how it was when the original question was asked.
