In total 603 Blue Flags will be flying on Spanish beaches and ports this summer, keeping Spain in its first position amongst the 36 countries of the northern hemisphere which take part in the programme. The blue flag system identifying quality beaches throughout the European Union.
It’s two lower than the number for 2010, as ten beaches have lost their flags and eight new ones have been awarded to Spanish ports.
Of the 511 flags awarded to the beaches, Galicia is at the head with 130. Valencia is next, having gained eight on last year to reach 116, followed by Cataluña’s 108, 85 in Baleares, and Andalucía with 81. Andalucía is however in first position with the most kilometres of its beaches to be covered by the distinction: a total of 112.2 kms.
This week in the Canaries it was announced by the Association of Environmental education, that the Canaries have received 38 blue flags this year for the quality of their beaches, one more than last year.
Seven of these are in Tenerife and include El Médano, La Tejita, Las Vistas in Los Cristianos, La Arena (Mesa del Mar), El Camisón, Troya and La Arena in Santiago del Teide. Unfortunately overall Tenerife lost three flags - Leocadio Machado (Granadilla), El Socorro (Los Realejos) and Playa Jardín (Puerto de la Cruz).
