Making Santa Cruz a safer city in north Tenerife

Local Santa Cruz de Tenerife drugs unit Unipol has notched up 46 arrests and attended to 1,194 incidents for possession or consumption of drugs throughout its city since 2009.

Many of these successes are in response from ordinary citizens and data collected during visits to various institutes throughout the municipality.

The unit has conducted 370 public safety controls through its preventive Static Control Devices (DEC) Public Safety and Traffic between January 2009 and May 2010, and has also had excellent results from its Canine Unit in the detection of narcotics on public roads and spaces.

Other preventative measures have included the identification of 6,154 people, 4,198 of them found in the city's various parks and plazas.

As an intervention unit Unipol agents were forced to intervene in a total of 90 fights in 2009.

The Unit has also given a total of 26 informative talks to pupils in local schools, complemented by school visits to the Unit's headquarters overlooking Los Campitos.

Although Unipol's focus is the elimination of the retail drugs trade, it has had significant operational success in the seizure of 24 kilograms of hashish found inside the boot of a car in the Vuelta de Los Pájaros area in 2009, and more recently, the arrest of four people in a garage in the Rue de la Marina when they confiscated 6,000 ecstasy tablets.

During May in Santa Cruz the police were very proactive in questioning and searching groups of young people, those they apprehended seemed to show the Officers respect. the police presence is very creditable.

Why would drug police be stopping drivers for routine paperwork checks?

It was a blockade and quick checkover of car docs, nothing serious
