I saw it safely with some schoolchildren once. On no account should anyone look at the sun with ordinary sunglasses. If you can't get the proper equipment an A4 sheet of white card and a hand mirror is probably all you need. Easy to take in a suitcase.

I shall see it, I remember last time in the UK when it happened a few years ago. All the birds stopped singing, very odd.

This will only be a partial eclipse if viewed from the Canary Islands. At maximum, just under 50% of the sun will be blocked by the moon, so it won't go dark like it does in a total solar eclipse.

If you have solar eclipse viewing film (or solar eclipse glasses, or a pinhole viewer) you will see that the shape of the sun looks like it has a "bite" taken out of it, instead of being the usual circle.

If the total eclipse is going to be visible from Tenerife, you are very lucky people!! I watched a total solar eclipse from the top of an Austrian mountain in 1999 and it was an awesome experience. Whilst it is dangerous to look at a partial eclipse with the naked eye, it is perfectly safe to look straight at the sun when it is totally covered by the moon, don't miss out! As soon as the sun begins to emerge from the other side of the moon, creating the "diamond ring" effect, you'll know that it's time to put your sunglasses back on. And for the rest of the day you'll be talking to perfect strangers "where did you watch it, wasn't it amazing.

I wonder if it is possible to buy the viewing glasses to look directly at the sun.
