Most (if not all) roads in Tenerife have speed limits either displayed at the road-side, or on the road surface in large bold white characters.

No they don’t most roads rarely have any signs, you see them at junctions and other such places but I have never seen a general sign to say what the limit is on a "general" road

The best limit we had was the 110 on the motorway.
It didn't slow the idiots down but it seemed to speed up the crawlers. Felt a lot safer, (I still did my usual)
For some reason, maybe the 120 sign, seems to frighten the slowboats to death. Once it was 110 they all seemed to speed up
Most dangerous drivers on the motorway are, by far, the crawlers.

We have owned a home and car in Tenerife for 7 years plus, there has NEVER been an occasion when I have not known the speed limit by observation of the CLEARLY marked speed restrictions. Try opening your eyes; little wonder there are countless avoidable accidents on the roads.

All I asked was what is the general speed limit, as in the UK when its 30mph its not marked by road signs. Simple question I would have thought.
I have owned an apartment for 28 years and always drive carefully as I do in the UK. But it would be nice to know the limit. I do know the limits when its marked up as its obvious.

What is a "general" speed limit?
There are different limits for: roads in a residential area (20), urban roads (50), roads outside a city (90), highways (100) and freeways (120) as well as for the type of vehicle you are driving. The above are the limits for motorcycles and "turismos" or standard private cars without trailers. This info found in my driving school manual including the newer norms which came in our mailboxes a few years ago. Don't know if they have been changed since then.

There is no general speed limit as such. I always assumed it was 40 unless marked (In most of LA and LC it is now 30 but clearly marked)

When I asked a policeman friend the same question he didn't know what I meant. He said that all speed limits are clearly marked.

When I suggested to him that joining a road where there was no marker apart from one further up the road he shrugged his shoulders.

My take on it is, if in doubt it's 40. kph not mph
