SANTIAGO del Teide Council has rejected a proposal by the Canary Coalition (CC) to clear up landslides following last year’s rock-fall.
It affects the area by the roundabout known as La Pescadora (The Fisherwoman), on the road linking one of the exits from Los Gigantes to Puerto Santiago and Playa de la Arena.
The CC wants the work completed, and precautionary measures taken, hopefully to avoid a recurrence.
But funding, and not safety, seems to be the primary concern. In January, at the request of the CC, Mayor Juan Gorrín (pictured with Cabildo President Carlos Alonso) indicated that the situation “was being worked on”.
Yet there has been little movement and, thanks to that “being worked on” comment, the proposal was rejected.
There are also questions over the legality of the agreement, signed by the town and the owners of the affected land.
Jonathan Martín Fumero, CC spokesman, said it was “unthinkable” that it had taken over a year to notify nearby home-owners of the issue affecting people and traffic safety, as well as the image for tourists.
But Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, on a recent visit to the area, has promised some good news for the area.
Next year, the Cabildo will definitely carry out re-surfacing of the TF-82 road linking Chío with Tamaimo and Santiago del Teide town.
Provision has already been made in the proposed 2014 Budget announced this week, with 480,000 euros set aside for the project,
And Alonso assured Councillor Fumero that more than one million euros in total will be spent on road improvements to Santiago in the next three years.
The Cabildo plans to sink 250,000 euros into completing the second phase of the road connecting Tamaimo to the Island Ring Road and Chío.
A further 300,000 euros will be earmarked in 2016 to renovate the connecting roads to Santiago del Teide’s coastal area.
Fumero was full of praise for the Cabildo’s undertakings concerning the roadworks, and for the two imminent projects on the coast, at the Hondura (Crab Island) and at the Plaza Bouganvilla in Los Gigantes, where improvements will be carried out.
