View Full Version : Is another Delta on its way?

Canarian Weekly
06-12-2013, 13:10
NEARLY eight years to the day since Tropical Storm Delta struck the Canary Islands, a similar threat could be heading in our direction. Meteorologists are closely monitoring an Invest 90L, which is currently in the Atlantic Ocean. An Invest is a designated area of disturbed weather, which has the potential to become a tropical storm. According to the following: NOPE ... this is for those of you that only read the headline of this thread ;) which is how scare-mongering starts... :

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=565793756822877&set=a.141756592559931.29053.141243542611236&type=1&relevant_count=1

As many have seen in media, forums, etc... We have a system of low pressure located to the West of Canary Islands which has subtropical characteristics, and the NHC (National Hurricane Center) has under investigation, although it has not officially named as Subtropical or Tropical.

However, since ACANMET we want to make these points clear, and only recommend believe official information as it is the coming of the AEMET:

It is false that will arise from a tropical cyclone as the DELTA and affect to the Canary Islands.
It is true that Canary Islands during the next few hours and days will be probably affected by rains and storms, especially the more Western.
It is false that these rains are due directly to the "subtropical" cyclone.
It is true that if due indirectly to the subtropical cyclone.
It is true that the subtropical cyclone will gradually go to weaken without approaching Canary.

For the coming week models if they are to show that something important may come, although it is yet to be seen.

It does look like something is on its way doesn't it.

Perhaps it's just cloud, although the forecast says some strong winds are expected for the south and northeast of Tenerife.

Funny that as the cloud mass is coming in from the west.

We have just got back to GDS after spending the evening in Los Cris, its starting to get quite hair raising there with high winds, sand storm off the beach and crashing waves. The waiters in the restaurant we were in had to make a mad dash to gather up all the tables and chairs and bring them inside. Winds are really picking up here on GDS now as well. I was quite relieved to get back indoors, and I think that's where I will be staying until this calms down!.

Yes and now it's a red alert today for heavy rains, orange alert for winds and yellow alert for coastal waves and thunderstorms.

Sounds quite exciting, but here in Puerto de la Cruz there hasn't been a puff of wind all during the night or this morning. Not a leaf is stirring.

I ran outside last night and moved all the patio pots and furniture and my neighbours are cutting down the tall branches of one of their trees, just to be ready.

I wonder when this will start....they say around 3 pm today. We'll wait and see!

Oh there was a slight movement of the branches of the little tree outside my window just now. It's 11:20 am and the temperature is 20.8°C.

STILL think the headline is appalling? The CW Flagged up last week that this could happen and while it's not a TS it is the first red alert for high rain since Delta.

Been expecting it all day with the dark skies, but it hasn't rained enough YET to have to bring the washing in.

I woke up at 8.15, everything was calm, no rain virtually no wind, but the sky seemed to be a bit of a sickly yellow colour. I could see then down across the golf course towards Los Abrigos and Montana Roja. There was some occasion lighting and some distant thunder. At 8.30 everything changed quite suddenly, torrential rain strong winds and much more thunder and lighting. The weirdest thing though was as the storm started so did my doorbell! and the damn thing wont go off, so Ive had to flip a switch on the board which has put a few lights out as well, buty at this rate we may not have electric for much longer in any case lol.

Its all very exciting at the moment. lets hope it stays exciting and does not deteriorate into terrifying! Good luck everyone!

All calm in Silencio at the moment.Have been up North today and on way up there was quite a bit of rain, but no wind, and back down saw very little rain, believe it or not. You just needed to drive sensibly and having a 4x4 does help.
Stay safe folks.

Still raining here in Puerto de la Cruz, it started about 2.00 yesterday afternoon and hasn't stopped since. Yesterday evening it seemed to be right above us with lots of thunder. The lightening was quite spectacular to see.

Its still hammering down up here in the mountain, above Charco del Pino at about 800m, almost non stop since it started Tuesday evening!
Our animals are bedraggled but OK, the ducks even want a break to dry out!

South Tenerife under water as rain strikes with a vengeance

Arona - 12.12.2013 - While some parts of Tenerife escaped relatively unscathed from the mid-week battering and lashing rain, the same cannot be said for a number of areas in the south of the island which are largely unaccustomed to the adverse conditions that have caused the government to issue its highest ever severe weather alert level. more... http://www.islandconnections.eu/

Funny you should ask about leccy Monkey cos our DT media TV has been playing up badly since the bad weather started! DT changed everything we've got a new box (the old one was showing faults)and other bits but the picture still freezes! the engineer can only think it's a leccy problem as no other faults are showing up on their system! The leccy doesn't actually drop just earlier this morning and last night the lights flickered now and again but no power cut at all! I can only think there may be power surges up here!!!???:dontknow: Blimey! sorry didn't mean to go on and on here! LOL!!!

We have DT media TV and always have problems with the programmes freezing no matter what the weather is like. Engineer hasn't come up with that excuse yet though.......a leccy problem! The last time we complained we were told that their system was being upgraded in a few days (this was a couple of months ago) but it's still the same.

We might have been lucky but we've been fine with DT for a year now! it's only just the last few weeks that we have had problems with it, one of the power adapters that we needed which serves the TV seems to play up! they have given us new ones as well as the new Dune box! Miguel at DT has helped me change to wifi to see how it goes...so far it's seems fine! fingers crossed! I just dunno!!!eek2:

STILL think the headline is appalling? The CW Flagged up last week that this could happen and while it's not a TS it is the first red alert for high rain since Delta.

We don't put out "Daily Express or Star" style headlines for no reason.

Yes the headline is still daft ... yes, we've had (obviously) heavy rain/storm, and very high winds the other day, but it's not a hurricaine ... never was. We don't get them often, but i've seen a few storms like this over the years that i've lived here... some worse than others, and this time it was worse in Adeje, Arona, Guia de Isora areas.... and a couple of places towards Santa Cruz.

the storm lost a lot of its power before it hit Tenerife. The big worry was for the afternoon yesterday but it was no where as bad as they feared.

I know we're all creeping into 'off topic' territory but the only prob I've had with DT media, during the storm, is when the power went off and the router needed rebooting.
Whetger or not you have a media box without the router you're nakt.
