I have been using Avast free for a few years now but a few friends and myself think it has gone downhill lately, constantly advising to update plug ins etc, also the voice prompts have changed! I use firefox as my browser and regularly use malwarebytes and CCleaner

I used fox tabs to go to favourite sites but that has also stopped working and seems to have a glitch,so now i am using bookmarks to view my regular sites

What antivirus would any of you geeks :D recommend? ta in advance!

ps,im on windows 7-64bit

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE). It updates itself in the background regularly. Doesn't keep trying to push you to pay for it, or download other add on's before you find the free version. I have been using it for a couple of years, and had no problems.

I'm not a geek Al (in some ways I may be) but I have always used Bitdefender Total Internet Security I find it excellent! Having said that I am using Avast free version for my Mac which doesn't really need an AV but have found it OK! Have a look here! http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ I expect JaBBa will be the best to advise!

I use Avast and Firefox and haven't noticed any issues on my old vista lappy. Never really needed to use any malware software. Before I went with Avast I used to run AVG - another free one.

Yes, Microsoft Security Essentials is fine. I use it on a desktop, laptop and netbook and have never had any problems. It is also highly recommended by Which? and, as others have said, it is free. Bit Defender is okay, but they charge after the free trial and I find they often prevent me using web sites which I have used regularly in the past with no problem. Bit Defender was put on my new desktop but I have removed it and loaded MS Security Essentials. Give it a try AJ!!

Microsoft cannot afford for something that has their name on it to fail
Therefore mse is a must if your running windows as only Microsoft has all the source codes for all the registries in windows and is therefore obviously best place to detect any programs that try to hide in them
All others simply cannot be as good as they cannot access the source resources which are only none to Microsoft after all windows is not open source like say Linux
Having said all that if you down load software from unauthorised sites and open links in unsolicited emails then expect to be hacked and lastly mse is only as good as long as you update regularly as hackers and writers of these malware programs are adapting all the time

Microsoft Security Essentials is as good as any, They are all only as good as their last update. Best advice always back up your important data to an external so if something does get in and do the nasty your important stuff is safe. As for things that promise to speed up your PC etc THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH. Get a pc health check on a regular basis from someone professional, they are subscribed to accredited services from Microsoft and have tools and programs that the normal so called expert does not have access to. CRtenerife south are good.

I'm using Avast for a long time now. I've never have any problems with security threats while using it. I've used other anti-virus software but I tend to come back to it.

Been using Free AVG for years and went over to Free Avast but it all kept going haywire. Took ages and I mean ages to start up. So I uninstalled Avast and went back to AVG with no probs. I use it on my phone as well.

If you want to use free antivirus, you can try Baidu' I used to like Avast because it would do its things quietly, if you enable the quiet mode It's a good antivirus and it notices you when an unknown device or user uses your wifi. For free These are the best payed antivirus in my opinions:
Norton internet security
Eset nod 32
Avast
VirCleaner

I am using Windows defender from many years. I haven't face any problem like slow speed , virus effected file etc. When ever you insert a external devise then scan it before opening.
No matter which antivirus you use you just update it regularly for safe.
Thanks

The one built into Win10 (defender) is as good as anything else. After all, they build the OS, so should know more than most how to protect it.

I had Symantec Norton AntiVirus on my laptop and it took ages to boot up. I now use Kaspersky, installed by A1 Computers, much cheaper, much quicker and I've had no issues.

Norton is the worlds worst when you no longer want to pay for it, uninstalling can be a real nightmare.
