How does the search engine work?

Hi! I want to ask a question about the Palmetum in Santa Cruz.
I remember seeing some info about this before so thought I would read or add to it if the answer to my question wasn't there.
I went to 'search' at the top of the page to type in 'Palmetum.' A box popped up but would not allow me to type anything. Mystified...... I have found the search engine very unsatisfactory in the past. Can anything be done to enhance it and make it much clearer for the user?

I just tried the live search and it wouldn't let me type in anything either Margretta, I then tried the advanced search just underneath it and it brought up 4 results! Hope this helps
