Greetings!
In a few years, I would like to move to Tenerife to open an after school learning centre that has a history of success and focuses on mathematics, Spanish, and also English. This program helps children to become self-learners. I have been working at this company for 12 years, and have seen success through thousands of children over the years. I would accept students from ages 3-18. However, the program works for adults as well who want to learn Spanish. The company itself will assist me in handling a majority of the paperwork, so that is not the advice I am seeking just yet.

Given the current unemployment rate, I wonder if this business will be successful? I would eventually like to grow to having at least 200 subjects (not necessarily students) enrolled. I would like to set the tuition to be 90-100 euros per month. Will families be able to afford this?

I know that it does take time to grow a business, and the center I work for now is successful due to word of mouth, and my terrific co-workers. The best thing about this program is that it's for every child.

For those that have children living there, do you think that this is a service that is needed?

Thank you so much for any input!

Is this extra or instead of school?
Instead of school the price would be fine
If it was you asking about schools concentration
Most schools are in Santa Cruz and La Laguna as it has the highest population concentration

You spell the word centre [center] the American way, are you from the USA/Canada?

Kumon, I guess. http://www.kumon.com

I remember an Argentinian contact who was considering this (aunt involved in a big way in Miami) but think he decided there were not enough people who could afford it here.

Yes it is an extra curricular program.
Thanks for the advice about Santa Cruz and La Laguna, the latter I had not looked into.

The spelling of the word 'centre' was a typo actually, in the US we spell it 'center.'

You would need to be offering something fairly special
Private language lessons run about 10-20€ an hour

Right. I have tutored students as well. However, this isn't really much of a tutoring program because its on-going. It just gets lumped in the same category. It actually works out to be much cheaper than tutoring in the long run.

You have a good objective on helping every child. i am just curious if it will also applicable for the adults for their learning.

It works for all ages, but not generally aimed at adults. I've had several parents enroll in the program over the years to support their children; or to strengthen their skills on a personal level. If you can get into a routine of doing a bit of work everyday you will see results.

Hey googles, I opened up a language school, Babel Language Academy, in El Médano 6 months ago. It is a similar idea to yours although we specialise in languages, specifically English, Spanish, German and Russian. We have a lot of young children learning English although secondary school age doesn't have a very high demand in the south for extra tuition. I opened in El Médano after much research and consideration because I saw a niche in the market for foreigners learning Spanish and the locals learning English but I think you really need to study the area before diving in. The north is a good option because of the larger number of residents, however, as you can guess, there is also more competition.

In terms of prices, 100€ might be a bit high, especially in the south. Our prices are 67€ a month for two hours a week with maximum 8 students per class. If you have extremely small groups that may be acceptable. If you want to see stats about family income, expenditure etc, check out the Instituto Nacional de Estadística or if you want any more advice or just a chat about setting up a business on the island, please feel free to email or call me and I'd be happy to help.
