Several years ago I wanted a certain model Sony Video camera.which had got top ratings in independent tests . UK price was around 750pds, reasoned that without vat etc, price in Tenerife should be about 550pds. after searching LC and LA where most of the prices were stupidly high (by the time they had put on all the add on's) found one in LC at a silly cheap price of 350pds.
Went in to buy it. Guy behind the counter said it was a rubbish model and proceeded to plug it into a monitor to show me how bad it was (probably plugged it into the wrong input on purpose) Then told me and proved via the monitor how much better a certain JVC model was (plugged it into the correct input). I said no I still wanted the Sony. He then gets very upset and says he cant sell me that one as it is his diplay model, and it would take six weeks to order one. So basically, he was never ever going to sell me the one offered at the crazy price it was being offered for.

Anybody else got any experiences?

Here's another one. Friend of mine on holiday in Torviscas wanted a new SD card for his camera, was offered a 2gb one for 12pds, (4 pds in UK) but was the told by one of our Asian brethren he had just had a delivery of new super duper ones that gave much better picture quality (now these things are digital and store digital info not pictures). sold it to my friend at a very special price of 20quid. It wasn't even a branded one just a cheap clone. OK my friend should know better, but he doesn't. It's still not an excuse to get ripped off by someone.

Back in 1992, Asian shop owner said to us ' you English want everything for nothing' we had an Argos catalogue with us & queried his price because it was more expensive than Argos, we pointed out Tenerife was supposedly Vat free. On leaving his shop he smacked my bum.!

The year before last at a Indian Bazar by the Los Christianos tunnel. I wanted a small digital Panasonic camera for my grandson, they had it in the display cabinet for about €30...........just what I wanted,

"Oh" said the Portly Indian man "I will have to get that one from my other shop as it's out of stock, please give me €20 deposit and call back in two hours time for your camera"
I said no and that I would just leave it, but my ever trustful wife said Ok and away we went away after parting with €20 and getting a receipt for it.

Two hours later we returned, ....."Oh he said, the camera is out of stock, but I have a better one, it's a %#*+{+] Brand, much, much better and only €45"

I demanded my money back and after much shouting arguing and verbal threats, which did no good. I told him that I would get the police and after that, I eventually did get my money back, but I wonder how many holiday makers fall for the scam and end up with €45 of rubbish!

The galling part of the story is that still a year later the "Nice Indian man" still remembers us smiles and wants to shake hands as we walk past his bazaar......Cheeky Git!

Although passing the shop many times I have never bought anything from HARRY'S in the alley at the bottom of the top square on the San Blas, however a very close lady friend visited the shop last week on my recommendation as her Motorola phone needed a charger, at best these are 5 to 8 euros anywhere but she foolishly mentioned to Harry or whoever was tending shop that she had left her charger in the UK and needed one urgently. Totally taking advantage of the fact that she was a woman he told my lady friend that he had just one left and charged her 15-95 euro. Be very aware and if you frequent HARRY'S then question everything you consider buying as the very SAME BRANDED charger is on sale at China City for 2-95 euro, even Motorola's RP is only £4-95 in the UK. Needless to say that I will never use or recommend HARRY'S to anyone so that extra 10 euros he overcharged my friend will lose him a great deal of money and devalue his reputation in the future. The last time we were over, we bought a small hairdryer from the shop, a great value and quality product, very pleasant to deal with.
