How can an American obtain a retirement visa in Tenerife?

I would like to chat with someone who has a non-lucrative retirement visa for Spain, living in Tenerife. I am in the process of applying for one, and would like to find out how difficult it is for an American to obtain.
Any help will be very much appreciated.
