I recently visited South Tenerife for one week. I used to spend some time with some timid homeless cats that live in a park-like place near 2 hotel complexes while I was there. I noticed that one of the cats had a bad infection in one eye. Soon the infection spread to her/his other eye as well. I contacted a well-known animal rescue organization already during my holiday there, explaining the situation, promising to pay for the medical care and neutering of the sick cat, if they just came and trapped her and took her to a vet. I waited, but didn't get any answer. Back home in Scandinavia I contacted another rescue organization. They said that they had too much work and too many cats in their care to be able to help this special cat. After that I contacted a private person who I know is feeding the cats around that area. She promised to go to seek for the cat last Sunday. I again promised to pay the costs. But - because one organization, to whom I donated several hundred euros in the past, used my money on booze, sending me drunken messages explaining that she never had the time to do what she had promised to do - I wanted this person to send me a photo of the cat and the vet bill. I haven't heard from her after that. And she doesn't answer my messages. So, it looks like nobody is interested in helping this poor suffering animal! You have to go through the hotel reception to get to the cat, but I suppose they have to let you through if it's a question about animal rescue! The hotel's policy is to hate and ignore the cats living on their premises, this I have to say.
Is there anyone in Tenerife who would like to help this cat? I last saw her/him over a week ago, and don't know at all how she/he is doing now. If you sincerily want to help and you love animals, even poor homeless cats, please, send me a private message here!

There are just too many cats in need.

Here are five that we caught at Laguna Park 2 tonight.

This is so terrible - those poor cats!

I'm going to make a donation which I hope will help get these cats treatment and care that they need, very heartbreaking to see.
I sincerely hope others can also follow suit!

That's so nice to hear, Young Golfer - I've donated before to Asocat a few times as I know it helps with food and vet bills, I'm just wondering DJ Dangerous if you could supply details on how to donate, or maybe a link to a page where it is explained, it might also encourage others to do the same?

Please keep up the good work!

Thank you all so much.
It is quite moving to see that our little forum family are so quick to help out!
We have received seven donations towards this project, and they add up to make a huge impact on the final cost!
We nabbed three more cats tonight, and will be back at it again next weekend - back to reality until then!
Thank you all again!

Thank you all so much!

We have now received nine donations towards this project, which really, really helps toward the cost.

If anybody is shy of making a monetary donation, which many people are in this day and age, donations of food, litter, products like Eliminall, Flevox, and Milbemax, and equipment, are just as beneficial.
Lidl (thank you Sue!) have the following carriers on sale at just€10 - which is less than half the usual cost of a similar carrier!

If you shine a bright torch at them once they're eating, they should freeze long enough for you to take a flash-photo. You can zoom in on your photo afterwards and see if either ear is clipped.

Thanks SueJ there was a female there a couple of months ago that had kittens well we think only one she ran across the road with the kitten in her mouth she unfortunately did not make it , but the kitten was saved and reared by a friend and has now been found a new home. From 5 that were there I now only see two each night. But poor things are so scared but are beautiful smokey grey colour.

Yes I will of course Just been over there now with their food but no sign of them tonight I have left their food where I usually leave it they have plenty of fresh water, I think they wander sometimes down the dip behind a kiosk Bless them I hope the other two are safe somewhere out of the five we first saw they all looked the same lovely grey colour so sad about the one that got knocked down.

Hi All, as a matter of interest what happens to the rescued cats, are they re-homed? I presume they are treated de-sexed ( if that's the correct description)

If any cats can be rehomed if at all possible then they are! some feral cats are neutered and returned to their colonies if they are safe! Dave ensures whenever he can to feed the cats! Everything is done to keep down the population and remove cats that are at risk. It takes a very special kind of person to take on this task like Dave! He has got a huge heart but unfortunately that does not pay for neutering, food, worming and flea treatments and most of all the dreaded Vets bills! I ask again if anyone could donate just a small amount it all adds up! Thank you!:hello:

Thank you so much, to everybody making donations. You wouldn't believe what a difference they all make - twenty quid here, thirty quid there, and they all add up to mean more cats looked after!

Where are these cats, Megaloo, and who sterilised the colony in the first place?

Hi All, as a matter of interest what happens to the rescued cats, are they re-homed? I presume they are treated de-sexed ( if that's the correct description)

Almost all of the cats are returned to the location they were trapped. Generally, the existence of a colony implies that the factors required for survival are already in place, so moving or removing cats does not solve the problem - more stray and abandoned cats will simply move in and utilise the same resources.

Re-homing adult cats is very hard, and rehabilitating wild or timid cats is a long and delicate process. We have a huge amount of cats in need of homes, and you can see them all here (https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.618679751537977.1073741830.536108069795146&type=3). Sharing the link on Facebook will help! :) Some of these have been in our care for years, others only a few weeks. The first ones on the list are amazingly soft, pure black kittens - no white patches, no stripes, no red, and they have fur that would put any fabric softener to shame!

The austrians vets used to come over once a year to sterilize the cats and dogs, one a vet complained and mad a denouncer to the police and closed them down, so much hard work went into trapping the cats and getting the poor animals sterilised making them have happy lives...

Yes, that was a wonderful association who work really hard for the animals here, and were bringing vets over from Austria, Germany, Britain - anywhere that they could. Funding was always tight, as they used literally thousands of Euro worth of medicines and materials.

There was always jealousy from greedy vets, but the last time, which I think was about two and a half years back (http://eldia.es/2012-02-25/sucesos/7-Denuncian-recinto-clandestino-castrar-animales-Sur-Tenerife.htm), a group of ten odd vets felt provoked enough to band together and report the volunteers and their work to SEPRONA, who confiscated equipment and materials, and shut the voluntary clinic down.

Tragic. :(

I'm sorry to report that the black cat with the head wound passed away on Friday.
His head wound was treated quickly, and had almost completely healed, along with the wounds on his four paws.
He had internal injuries which were difficult to treat, but his condition was slowly improving.
The vets suspected that his injuries had been inflicted deliberately, and he had been suffering with them for a while.
He also had FeLV, and a very active case of it.
The exact cause of death is unknown, but the vets suspect a mystery infection which overwhelmed his depleted antibodies.
We are heartbroken, particularly since this boy had suffered at the hands of man.
We really wanted to save him.
The route cause of the huge quantity of stray and abandoned cats is the people who dump them and don't neuter them, and how anybody can then be cruel to animals on top of that is beyond me.

Dave now has a very tiny black/grey boy kitten in his care that absolutely needs a home instantly. He just can't take care of the small kitten, because he works full time, goes around feeding and trapping homeless cats for neutering at night, and has to take care of the many cats that he has in his care and he hopes to get adopted. Please, somebody, adopt the little one! You can find a photo of him on AsoCat's facebook page. - At the same time: You have to know what you do when you adopt a kitten, you have to take care of him for the next 14-20 years, and that takes both time and money. But it also gives so much!

About the situation of homeless cats in South Tenerife: The situation won't get better until hotels, restaurant owners, apartment complex owners and so on will take at least minimal care of the homeless cats in their area. With minimal care I mean providing water for the cats, and food at least once a day, and informing rescue organizations when they see an unneutered or sick cat.

The lovely cats in Tenerife are part of the charm of the island, and we tourists want them to be there but we are happy to see healthy, happy cats who can survive in that lovely climate even without a home. What we don't want to see, is overpopulation, diseases or hungry, skinny cats. The tourism in Tenerife is flourishing, surely you are able to take care of your lovely cats!
