Can anyone tell me if NIE has to be renewed ? If so how often.

No, it doesn't. Not if you have the latest version. Before then, it was every five years (if memory serves me).

I thought that the original NIE was only valid for three months, and thereafter had to be converted into a residencia or non-resident NIE?

Thanks DJ we are moving over late next year and was just wondering if it was worth getting NIE whilst on holiday over xmas new year

It's very quick and easy to do. I brought friends to get theirs a few weeks ago.
We went on the first day and collected the bank form, went to the bank and paid the fee.
We went back to the police station the next morning and collected a numbered ticket.
We went off for brunch, did some shopping, went back and collected NIE.
