in particular. I have been using monthly contact lenses for 12 years now and I am having problems in the eye rejecting lenses after a few days.
Watching the advertisement on UK TV recently, by the Olympian gentleman, raised my attention to having treatment done now!
Has anyone on here had treatment, in the UK or elsewhere (in particular Tenerife), what were the costs for me with Long VIsion, who does it here and what was the results?

You probably need a different type of contact lens that allows more air/water to the eye. Without sufficient mositure and air it can allow bacteria to spread between the ey and lens material, resulting in the kind of problem you have developed. The alternative is to cease wearing len's for some time and try again, but, of course, the problem may recur.

I had laser treatment some years back in the UK and at first all was well, perfect vision, but, coincidentally it was on a trip back to the UK from Tenerife that I realised I couldn't see properly (it was night) to drive home. I had to go to an optician and buy glasses. Might have been my eyes, but don't assume laser treatment is the be-all-end-all. I also still developed cataracts later on.

Thanks for that detailed observation. The problem with trying to stay off them is a bit like me trying to stay of the fags. I know that I should but just don,t!
I understand what you are telling me about the treatment you had and I most certainly don,t view (what a pun!) them with supreme confidence but I would like to look (another pun) into having mine done. At 63 yrs old and bad health I would not be seeing (another!) this with long term expectations.

I'm diabetic and my doctor advised me against it due to high probability of my eyesight deteriorating over time .

Thanks,
Do make sure you go to a reputable company. I went to a consultant just off Harley Street who told me my eyes were not suitable for laser surgery. I couldn't help but wonder if I had been to see someone less, er, honest or even just less competent, I could have ended up with huge problems. This was several years ago

I had laser surgery done in the UK about 18 years ago when it was still very new in the UK. For many years my eye sight was great and I thought it was the best thing I had every done. About 7 years ago I started to have blurred vision and to cut a long story short and many specialist visits later I'm now partially sighted in one eye and very poor vision in the other. Admittedly the treatment they use now is different but no one knows what the efects will have on your eyes in the years to come. I wouldn't recommend it.

I would like to thank you for all of your observations. Really interesting but as I,ve said on here since I am 63 yrs of age thinking about the treatment losing its effect after 15 years does not worry me. However the price does! If anyone knows of the pricing here nowadays I,d be really interested. Thanks again.

I had laser surgery in UK 18 years ago for short sighted in both eyes with BUPA. It cost me 1,600 pounds It was still quite new back then but I had spent a few years before looking into the different options. I was informed that I would not end up with worse eyesight than I had but that I may get some night blindness. Fortunately for me I ended up with 20/20 vision in one eye and slightly long sighted in the other. At that time they did one eye and you waited three months to get the second one done. Which I was glad there was a gap as it was so bloody painful I had to pluck up courage to get the second one done!!!! But it was the best 1,600 pounds I have ever spent. Ok I am fifty this year and I do need reading glasses now. But that was explained to me that I would have to whether you had surgery or not as it has nothing to do with your eyes ageing. The other thing that was explained was that I could still develop cataracts when I got older again nothing to do with the surgery. I do see an eye specialist once a year anyway as we have glaucoma in the family. All of the specialists have been amazed that I have had surgery as there is no sign of any scaring in either of my eyes. Guess I had a very good surgeon. Because things have developed so much now the operation is done on both eyes at the same time and is much less painful nowadays. So for me I would advise anyone who is thinking about it just find a reputable clinic and go for it. Good Luck.

Jim as always, thank you very much. Rather surprised at the costs as I had seen on UK telly prices much lower. Still, the old addage, you only get what you pay for! Since I cannot fly nowadays I shall have to seek elsewhere, in Santa Cruz, no doubt.
Again many thanks.

Hiya - I had lasic done on each eye (6 months apart) to allow for complete healing at St James Hospital in Leeds. This was about 11 years ago and I cannot fault it. I had extremely bad astigmatism and was -6 and -8! They brought me well up to better than driving vision and he made one eye slightly shorter sighted than the other eye so that I would not need reading glasses as I got older. The cost was £2,500 per eye but they were the only ones doing astigmatism at that time. The aftercare was superb and I would definitely do it again.

I had my eyes lazered 6 years ago in the UK. I went to The Sunderland Eye Hospital, I chose them as they had been doing various eye operations for over 25 years. I didnt want to go to an opticions on the High Street who were new to doing eye lazering. Some were offering pay for one, get one free! That put me off straight away. There was no pain, just a bit of discomfort for a few days. At the time it cost £3,000. I am extremely happy with the results and I still have 20/20 vision. I had one 4 seconds under done and one over done, which sounds very strange, but by having that I will never need reading glasses. Sharon.:)

Dear Mr. Lish,

About three years ago I decided to seek laser treatment , so as to avoid wearing

glasses (that hide my fabulously face). My GP warned me of the risks involved in going

to clinic that does a fixed price, and also the fact that not everybody's a suitable candidate.

I was told in Dublin, by a fixed price place that it would cost €2800 less discount for Health

Insurance cover of €800. No charge for assessment.

I then went to a top of the range Eye Clinic in a Private Hospital, who charged me €120

for an assessment and the verdict was that I wasn't suitable.

Not content with this situation, I sought a third opinion in the clinic in Santa Cruz when

next in Tenerife. I paid about €135ish for this assessment and the result was as follows

A. I was not suitable for just Laser surgery of any type because of the longer term.

B I was told that a new proceedure WOULD be suitable for me.........They would open

up my eyes and put in some kind of contact lenses and stitch them in permanently.

Each eye would be done separately to allow healing, and in about three months they

would then do the original Laser Surgery on both eyes, again a few weeks apart to

allow for healing.

The cost €3000 per eye for the clinic total.......€6000

Staying in tenerife for 2 months

Plus Flights Taxis spending money etc €3000

Add in 2 months loss of Income.

It would last for life (no need for glasses or reading glasses)

A friends brother with similar vision level to me, went to a fixed price clinic and has

perfect sight ever since. He paid only €1600.

I can't remember the name of the Santa Cruz clinic except it's up a verrrry narrow

road...thru traffic lights and down a verrrry narrow one-way street... here there's a

secondary school or college. I think that the name of the road is a girls name.....something like ...********......

francesco..... morena.. de*******

Decending into gobbledegook now!!!!

Hope this helps.:hello:

Thank you so much for that information, most helpful. At my age, coming up for 65, the costs of getting it done here are prohibitive well, certainly for me. Short of winning the lottery it seems that this is out of the question. If it had been, say 2500, all in, then I may have been able to get that sort of money to-gether. So, in short, I,ll just have to make do with the ever decreasing eye-sight which I have and wearing the glasses which I abhor. The single most difficult thing glasses do to me is reverse parking of the car! I,ve got a reversing camera on the car but I still use the "swivel-around" method to make sure I don,t hit any pillars and the like. I had been using disposable contacts until last year and they were supberb but, with age and the eyes drying up, I had to stop using them although I may give them another go as a wee retirement present!
Again, thank you for the detailed info.
