A ship left Freetown in Sierra Leon about 8 days ago and docked in Tenerife.

Last night it docked in Dublin.

The only legal requirments ( in Ireland ) are for the Captain to Certify that all the crew are well.

If that ship had been in a country where there was 'FOOT AND MOUTH' disease, it would not have been allowed near the place coz it could've wrecked our cattle industry.

We need this issue to be dealt with competently.

I think we have some way to go. yet

I think that although there is a risk from crew members having the Ebola virus, my worries as far as shipping goes is "stowaways" or "illegal" passengers having the full blown illness and trying to get to country where they think there will be better medical treatment available.

Yes they were all well today , what about 3 wks time when the incubation period is up and they have moved on to somewhere else. Try and find everyone they were in contact with after all that travelling around. Scarey stuff this.

Essex Eddie first raised the possibility about Ebola reaching Tenerife, I was a bit sceptical but to my knowledge there have been no cases in The Canaries to date

There is a confirmed case of Ebola in Glasgow....all that has been announced is that the patient is in a isolation unit.

The latest news is that the patient is a Health Worker who has returned from Sierra Leone and is being treated at the Gartnavel Hospital Glasgow.

This is the latest release from the Royal Free Hospital...........

Ebola patient
29 December 2014

The patient will be treated in the high level isolation unit (HLIU).

Any further updates will be available on the trust website www.royalfree.nhs.uk

The HLIU is run by a dedicated team of doctors, nurses and laboratory staff from the department of infection. Access to the unit is restricted to these specially trained medical staff. The HLIU is designed to ensure our medical staff can safely treat a patient with a dangerous infectious disease such as Ebola. A specially-designed tent, with controlled ventilation, is set up around the patient’s bed and allows the staff to provide clinical care while containing the infection. There are various facilities in place, including a specific entrance for the patient, sterilisers which de-contaminate waste and a dedicated laboratory for carrying out tests, all of which help to ensure the patient can be treated safely and securely.

i actually watched a programme a few weeks ago called something like "will i catch ebola" you could probably still get it on catch up? anyway it proved that it is so hard to catch, nothing like catching a cold, it is not airborne like a cold and in fact it would be difficult to catch it if someone sneezed in your face, which people very rarely do, it is actually passed on through bodily fluid, and the reason that so many people die from it in africa (i think it is 9 out of 10?) is because they just don't have the facilities that we in the west have, and they say that the survival rate would be 8 out of ten here in the western world, it really just boils down to being healthy and having access to a saline drip, which if you think of it they don't have either of those 2 things in most african countries, it all reminds me of the aids frenzy back in the 80's when people with HIV were ostracised because people were scared of catching aids, and nowerdays as long as you wear protection and take your prescribed drugs you can have a healthy sexual relationship with a partner without fear of getting HIV yourself, mind you i still think i would put 2 on just in case:laugh:

I've just read this extract from the BBC about the latest news on Ebola.

The screening measures put into place to prevent Ebola arriving in the UK are being relaxed.
Public Health England said there will no longer be specialist staff based at Birmingham and Manchester airports or at the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras.
It said the threat was now "significantly lower" as the situation improved in West Africa.
The measures at Heathrow and Gatwick, the two main routes of entry from the affected countries, remain in place.
There were just 26 new cases of Ebola reported in West Africa last week. At the peak of the outbreak there were more than 1,000 cases each week.
The risk of further Ebola cases being imported to the UK is now very low and continues to decrease.
Prof Paul Cosford, Public Health England
Health officials introduced extra checks at major routes into the UK for people arriving from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.
Temperatures were taken and people were asked to complete a questionnaire to establish whether they had been in contact with anyone infected with the disease.
People were also told what to do if they developed symptoms.
Phone screening
However, people arriving in Birmingham, Manchester airports and at St Pancras station will now be screened over the phone.
All health workers returning to the UK will continue to be screened and monitored until the Ebola outbreak is over.
Prof Paul Cosford, from Public Health England, said: "The risk of Ebola transmission to the UK from West Africa is now significantly lower than when the screening arrangements were originally implemented.
"The risk of further Ebola cases being imported to the UK is now very low and continues to decrease due to the considerable decline in the scale of the epidemic in West Africa, the efforts of the global response to control the virus' spread, the control measures in place in West Africa and the low number of people entering the UK from affected areas."
