Popped in there last night with a scooter mad friend (not my scene). What an obnoxious bar owner.
My friend gave him two new scooter mags to which the owner (Nigel) just slung them over the counter without a word.
After a while of deafening music and football on all the TVs of which nobody was interested in, I asked him if he could put music videos on the TVs like they normally do. He just said " no point as nobody is watching the TV" I said well they would if you took the footy off. He just looked at me. Then I just leant across and told him that he hasn't a clue how to run a bar and walked out. He spends most of the evening playing with his laptop. Its a shame as it was a good bar and quite unique.

Please do not tar the staff with the same brush. My colleague and I work in the bar and when we are on, we treat our customers withrespect, making their stay on this lovely island an enjoyable one.we both go out of our way to assist in places to visit, eat and things to do. The strip of bars are a friendly, helpful crowd and try to give good memories.

I think that's fair enough.

In fairness the OP only mentioned your boss..:tiphat:

Having spoken to Nigel the owner the other day about his recollection of the alleged incident, he explained that the bar continuously has Sky sports news running, (with the sound off), because often potential passing trade see the “Breaking headlines” and pop inside for a drink. He also placed the Scooter magazines, (which he was extremely grateful for), safely above the bar and out of harms way of any potential water damage and the girls continued to dance to the music which he plays via his laptop. He also seems to recall the gentleman making these accusations staying for a couple more drinks and returning on the following Friday to take advantage of the bars usual two for one offer. Some people put money before pride eh.

One sided jaundice views when aired public often wrongly paint images of bars and bar owners who work their socks off to make a living and keep staff in employment through these difficult economic times.

Comments like:

“Good for you ,I could name a few other bars for you to work your wonders on, do you think they listen or even care .Thank goodness these folk are few and far between”.

“And they wonder why they go broke”.

are in my opinion ill-founded and misinformed.

I've been in this pleasant bar a few times and have only had the misfortune to meet the owner "Nigel" on one occasion and have can sum him up in a couple of words......miserable and unwelcoming....maybe he should stay in the background, play on his computer and let his happy staff deal with the customers.

I've been in a few times, which must say something.

I was in there a couple of days after it opened and he was "Mr. Chirpy" back then....A few months down the line and now not so chirpy. Definitely shouldn't be front of house. I've only ever been served by him so have never met the staff unfortunately.

I agree that these guys have a lot on their plate but the public should never see it.

As for the post saying that the critics of bars are misguided or ill informed, we can only call it as we see it. What's being suggested is that every bar in Los Cris is perfectly run.......Wrong!

The Funchal is a difficult place to operate because it's so tight. I've seen many a whingefest break out when someone sits his missus down and then walks in the wrong bar....lol..

So really it seems that whatever actually happened, the perception of the owner is that he is miserable with customers - theres a reality check for him then, however hard done by he feels about the criticism

The strange thing for me about the whole sorry episode is that “Mr Disgruntled” says: “Then I just leant across and told him that he hasn't a clue how to run a bar and walked out”. After doing untold harm with his malicious post, why on earth did he have the bare faced cheek to return the following Friday to take advantage of the two for one offer? Hypocrisy at its finest!

And that's according to Mr. Miserable:wink:, that Mr. Eddie returned....let's wait for Mr. Eddie to return from Tenerife and hear what he has to say. After all he must be given the chance to defend his Malicious, harmful & cheeky post!! .

I'm thinking Sexless Eddie may have "embellished" his post a bit to make the point....I just hope Nigel doesn't turn out to be Nigel Benn......:twak:

Sexless Eddie! What have I got that name from?

I did return with my scooter mad friend as I don't hold any grudge, why should I. Nigel bought us a drink. Perhaps I caught him on a bad night. I only posted what I found. I shall still continue to frequent the bar.
I just didn't agree with sky sports on all the time in a scooter bar when there is a string of bars all with sky sports on? Then who am I, just a customer.

Also my post was not "Embellished" at all. A bit of an over reaction remark I think. I told it as it was. Not over the top at all.

Anyway who is this AlanMc who always seems to jump at the defence of bars? Is he some kind of protector of bars?

Chill out Eddie, it's just a bit of harmless fun....

In your post you said.... " Then I just leant across and told him that he hasn't a clue how to run a bar and walked out."......Not really the words of someone who expected to be served if he ever returned..lol.

You're now saying you've not only been back, you've had a free drink, all is well, and you'll continue to frequent the place...

So, unless I'm missing something, I can't really see the point of slagging him or his bar off in the first place....

Anyway, it's christmas......all the best..

I can see Eddies point/gripe... hopefully the owner will try and put a chirpier face on in public in the future and then get better reviews LOL ... I agree that even if you're struggling and business is grim or you're busy, you HAVE to keep that smile in place, customers don't want grumpy gits.

There is a bar up by the church in Pueblo Canario, if you sit outside on the wall/bench and just casually watch his TV he comes and moans at you, told my Canarian hubby he couldn't sit there and watch his TV ... ummm WTF? seriously? my hubby just pretended he didn't understand him. You're not going to get people to come into your bar if you act like that. I can't remember the name of the bar, Rabbit or Bunny something. So hopefully he'll read this and stop acting like a loony when people walk past, see his huge tv and stop and watch for a minute, until he comes out and tells them off for watching it.... :wow:rolleyes2:rolleyes2:rolleyes2:rolleyes2:rolle yes2:

Yup! you're right you have missed the point.
It was my scooter mad friend that wanted to go back, I just tagged along. He could have refused to serve me but why should he. I didn't cause any trouble, that's why I leaned forward and spoke to him so nobody else could hear me. If you cant take criticism then you shouldn't be in business.

Also the other point mentioned about me earlier being a hypocrite in taking the two for one drinks. The normal beer price there is 2.50c a pint, If I was that bothered about the price I could have gone down the front and bought a beer for €1. Its just that its normally more busier on a Friday.
Hey ho! Onwards and upwards.

Over the course of this last year, doesn't bother me as I never went in, but i'm sure he would lose business acting like that...

It was about three weeks ago when I last went in, I cant see him to have left as his mother is the owner.
It is a good bar if you are into scooters apart from the TV. In fact I have informed two separate potential customers of the bar within the past two weeks.
