Spanish resident renting a car in the UK with a UK licence

Has anyone recently been to UK, (Spanish resident) and rented a UK car with their paper UK licence? It appears that most car hire companies will not accept the UK licence without back up utility bills/bank statements from your UK address. Just wondering if it is possible as I am planning to change to Spanish licence next month, but need to travel to UK prior to this.

If you are resident in Spain then using a UK driving licence is illegal because it will not be registered at your correct address...simple as that.
