Me and TheBloke have been investigating how you go about donating you body to medical science in Tenerife, as we both wanted to do it. We are not religious and we believe that once you're dead your body is just that... and empty body, so someone should make some good of it.

ORGAN DONATION

Many people want to donate their organs after death and in England you'd get a donor card... Well, you can get one here too. If you want to make you organs available for other people after your death you can sign up for a donor card here : http://www.eresperfectoparaotros.com/

Sign up to the website and you will get an instant pdf card which you can print off and put in your wallet. Obviously, the same rules apply as in the UK... you have to inform your nearest and dearest.

DONATING YOUR BODY TO MEDICAL SCIENCE

There are a few considerations that you need to think about before you apply to do this.

You need to let your nearest and dearest know your wishes so that they can be contacted as soon as possible after death

If you donate your body to ULL (University of LA Laguna) here in Tenerife, they can only accept your body if you actually die on Tenerife. It's impossible for them to take on the costs of transfer of the body should you pop your clogs anywhere else... however your family could contact the faculty of medicine closest to where you have died and inform them of your wishes and they may or may not accept your body.

At the moment of death a copy of your clinical history would be sent with your body to the faculty of medicine.

You need to bear in mind that your body may be refused of your death occurs violently... i.e. traffic accident or if you die of an infectious disease such as hepititis, AIDS, Mad Cow Disease, or anything that could be contagious.

If you wish to donate your organs at the same time, you should bear in mind that due to the processes necessary to preserve your body you will probably only be able to donate your eyes, as many organs are not usable after preservation.

Other things that would make it impossible for them to accept your body would be if you have had a recent amputation, recent surgery, you are morbidly obese.

Most of all, just because you offer your body does not mean it will be accepted at the time of death, so if you are donating purely to save on burial costs for your family, then you need to be aware that you will have to make back-up provisions in case your body isn't accepted. There can be many reasons why your body would not be accepted... including if they already have a lot in storage and simply do not have room for you.

Once you have considered all these points and you still would like to donate your body, this is what you need to do :

The donation can be done formally by filling in a form. To get the form, you need to send an email to the Faculty of Medicine at ULL on the following email : donacion [at] ull.es

You will be sent an application form. You need to fill it in and post it back with a copy of your NIE and passport to the address on the top of the form.

Once your application is received, they will process it and if you are accepted they will send you a donor card to you postal address which you need to carry at all times so they, and you family, can be contacted as quickly as possible should you die.

If you want to speak to anyone about any doubts or questions your might have, you are invited to call 922 31 93 34 between 8.30am and 2pm or visit the Faculty of Medicine which is found next door to the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC).
