THE winter sales are officially underway in Tenerife, giving the economy a shot in the arm and bargains galore for punters.
Around 1,800 jobs will be created in the Canaries, an increase of around 5% on last year, according to estimates by Adecco.
They believe that, nationally, some 35,000 will be given short-term work contracts -10% more than a year ago.
The sectors in which more jobs will be created during the sales period is linked to consumption, so shops that sell perfumery and cosmetics, electronics, toys and food will need extra staff.
And even hotels and restaurants will see an upturn in staff numbers.
Adecco also notes that labour supply for the next few months could increase by around 60% for some companies and employment in some sectors like human resources.
In the Canary Islands, the post-Christmas and New Year sales are expected to see sales traffic around 7% higher than in 2014. The number of sales has increased steadily over the past five years.
Gustavo Matos, the Cabildo’s Director General of Commerce, said: “I’m satisfied with the positive data on how the economy will increase over this sales season.
“Not everyone can talk about an economic recovery in the Islands as such because there are many families going through great difficulty, but this will help. An increase in sales and people working is always welcome, especially at this time of the year.
“Traders have had it bad over the recent, difficult years, but it is the hard work of traders which has kept us going. I have lots of admiration for the workers.”
The official sales season goes on into March and savings are everywhere. Some outlets have already advertised reductions of up to 75% in an attempt to drive business forward.
