When is the best time to book flights for the New Year, 2016?

How bad is this, I am already thinking about my next trip, which is to coincide with my birthday which is on the 3rd Jan, the question is do I fly out the last week in December or on the 1st or 2nd of January, I am concerned with overbooked flights.

You will probably find flights on and after the 1st of Jan are half the price of the December flights, and mostly half empty.
