ADTEMEXI Cruz Hernandez is the new Carnival Queen after triumphing in the Santa Cruz beauty pageant on Wednesday night.
The 27-year-old, who beat 14 other hopefuls, said: “Unbelievable! I am so very happy. I cannot believe it!”
She wore an ensemble called “The Aurea Fantasy” which was designed by Jorge Gonzalez, and was representing Fuentealta and the Santa Cruz Cultural Association.
Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez presented Adtemexi with her trophy after an exhilarating competition. Traditionally, the event can take a few hours. But this year’s director, Juan Carlos Arma, made the show fast-paced, and he was rewarded with a snappy pageant which was well received.
The theme was “2060”, and the show opened with a spectacular, futuristic light-and-sound extravaganza. Dancers, dressed in LED lights, were accompanied by acrobats and various dance troops and ensembles. The half-hour opening was breathless and set the tone for the evening.
Hosts Anna Simon, Ivan Bonales and Manolo Artilles introduced the judging panel, which included model Helen Lindes, Elisabeth Reyes (the current Miss Spain), local TV journalist Pilar Rumeu, ex-footballer Jose Antonio García Calvo and Tenerife Casino boss Jose Alberto Muiños.
More than 6,000 people attended the gala and the first seven contestants drew gasps and cheers.
Yesenia Sanfiel had the honour of going first, her Daniel Page design representing La Opinion and McDonald’s. Anaís Acosta was next up, followed by Sonia Hernandez and then Alba Suarez Montesinos.
The fifth candidate, Cristina Corujo, wore a “Medieval Fantasy” design by Javier Caraballero, while Gabriela Teran paraded a design called “My Glory”. Lucía González, representing Café Hawk, finished off the first set.
The high bar was set and during the interval, which featured singer Miriam Reyes, along with more local dance troupes, commentators struggled to separate the contestants.
The second batch all dazzled, before the judges had the unenviable task of choosing a winner and her bridesmaids.
The second set started with Teresa Pitti, representing Carrefour and Radio Club Tenerife. Naomi Alvarez followed, ahead of Yarelli Luis and then Lucia Rodriguez.
Jesica Siverio, who wore a design called “Amphitrite” by Rayco Ramirez, with Javier Santana third last before Ademetexi Cruz and, finally, Sara Diaz.
Once the jury retired to deliberate, Jonathan Amaro, Tere Melian, David Amador, Leyla Melo, David González and Pilar Lamb entertained the crowd. They were followed by the Hall Effect group, before the Carnival Queen was selected.
Ademetexi was given a standing ovation by the judges as she was crowned. Lucía González was named first bridesmaid, Sonia Hernández second bridesmaid, and Teresa Pitti completed the trio.
The event was broadcast live on T Canarias and nationally on Nova TV
