TENERIFE has been all over the UK newspapers and popular lifestyle websites this week as the cast of The Only Way Is Essex have been filming scenes for their new series.
And it’s nice, for once, that a TV show is giving some positive publicity for the Island, rather than hatchet-job TV shows such as OAPs Behaving Badly.
The cast of TOWIE, as the show is fondly called, seem to have spent all their free time posting pictures on Twitter and social media about the delights of their stay.
The constructed reality show returns to UK TV screens on 22nd February, and the 14th series opener will feature the girls’ trip to Tenerife.
Lauren Pope, Danielle Armstrong, Billie Faiers, Fearne McCann, Lydia Bright, Bobby Norris, Gemma Collins and Chloe Sims are among the stars who have travelled over and have been followed by the UK paparazzi.
Every day this week, papers such as the Daily Mail have run lengthy pieces on the exploits of the TOWIE cast in Tenerife.
Their arrival at Reina Sofia airport on Monday saw pictures of Bobby Norris in an unusual Mickey Mouse onesie, making all the entertainment pages by sunset.
The following day, he was snapped around his hotel pool in La Caleta wearing nothing more than a small, red willy warmer! It’s not a picture we would publish in a family newspaper, but it did remind us of the lead singer from Cameo!
Like the previous day, the picture was all over the newspapers and internet. The girls were not to be outdone. Pool and bikini pictures flooded the internet and Twitter, again showcasing the Tenerife February sunshine. Chloe Sims shone in a stunning pink bikini, while Jessica Wright’s blue bikini created the same level of media interest.
They were in a number of Tenerife night spots on Tuesday night and they bumped into Dane Bowers, who is DJing at Magic and on Oasis Fm currently, and they partied into the very early hours.
The following afternoon Jessica Wright Tweeted her 1.38 million followers: “Well last night was epic.”
It was also an interesting night at Biancos as the cast dined while Dane Bowers performed. They all enjoyed the evening and Tweeted their approval. And it wasn’t just the food which got the girls smiling.
Gemma Collins in particular, enjoyed the standard of service. In fact, she enjoyed it so much that she stole a kiss off the waiter Tini.
Jessica Wright then sent the picture on Instagram with the caption “Go on Gem!” This led to a of stories about Gem and the “mystery man”!
Aside from the speculation over a new show romance, the newspapers have been filled with stories of rows between the girls. One claimed that Ferne McCann had been having a series of rows with Danielle Armstrong, and that Bille Faiers was acting as a peacekeeper.
All stories were, of course, being written from behind a desk in London. But these gossip items bring interest to the show and, thanks to the week-long filming, great exposure for Tenerife.
Plenty of Tenerife residents will be on screen when the programme is aired. They were hired as extras during party scenes. The pay of between 100-200 euros, plus a free bar apparently attracted lots of interest. And those lucky enough to be chosen told Canarian Weekly that the stars were “Brilliant. They were funny, open and happy to talk. And happy to pose for pictures.”
Traditionally, the first episode of a new TOWIE series features filming overseas. Previous years have been set in Marbella, Dubai and Las Vegas. The show began in 2010 and the Tenerife episode will be the 147th.
Despite gaining criticism for the way it portrays Essex people, the show has been a phenomenal success. It has been the launch pad to stardom for Amy Childs, Joey Essex and Mark Wright, who has recently been in Tenerife filming Take Me Out.
