MARIANO Rajoy, whose Government is backing “justice” to the tune of 77m euros, says it will revise court fees and increase the number of those seeking legal aid.
The Spanish Prime Minister, during a visit to the building works on the Courts of Justice in La Rioja, stressed that justice was “a cornerstone of the rule of law and a bastion of our well-being”.
He also said that La Rioja – an autonomous community and a Spanish province in the north of the Iberian Peninsula – falls within the European Union’s regional incentives.
During his visit to the building works taking place on the Courts of Justice there, Rajoy said they were an important example of co-operation between public authorities, involving the Ministry of Justice, the Regional Government of La Rioja and Logroņo City Council.
“Without them, these works could neither be completed, nor enjoy continuity,” he added.
The budget for modernising Spāin’s justice system has risen to 77m euros, and Rajoy defended the need for “more user-friendly, more accessible, faster, more efficient and, above all, fairer justice”.
In terms of the reforms undertaken, Rajoy said: “They are already bearing fruit and will, in the future, be more plentiful and better.”
He stressed that the Draft Constitutional Law on the Judiciary, soon to be approved, “will strengthen the structural role of justice”.
And to ensure more user-friendly justice accessible to the needs of all, he said: “The system of court fees will be revised and the number of beneficiaries of legal aid increased.
The PM also announced that the State will be provided with new instruments to combat certain criminal offences, such as hatred and gender-based violence, and in the fight against corruption.
“From the Criminal Code to the Criminal Procedure Act, the idea is to undertake reforms so that justice is adapted to the present needs of society,” he underlined.
“A clear commitment will also be made to modernisation, and to the implementation of new technologies in the administration of justice.
“In 2015, for the first time, we have increased the budget allocated by the Ministry of Justice to these items to a total of 77m euros, while we are also increasing the number of prosecutors and judges – and this important!”
Rajoy also said: “The Government has fought a successful battle in Europe, so that La Rioja participates in the system of regional incentives on the new map of regional aid, approved by the European Commission, which is unprecedented.
“This means that 61 municipalities in this region, and more than 40% of the population, will benefit from aid to their companies to incentivise investment and job creation.”
In relation to the floods recently affecting La Rioja – especially in the areas of Calahorra and Alfaro – he said various authorities, including the La Rioja Regional Government, were already working to repair the damage caused.
He said his Government, in the near future, will approve a royal decree “to process aid in the swiftest and most effective manner possible”.
Finally, Rajoy said: “La Rioja and the city of Logroņo have been able to become benchmarks in terms of citizen well-being and social progress in the eyes of the people of Spain.”
He added: “The whole population of La Rioja should feel proud because their region has achieved worthy prestige, having found a way to combine economic development and quality of life.”
