We´ve beeen using Paypal since it started - whatever date that was. Brilliant service when we were in the UK and also since we have been here. Even more useful in fact, because you don´t have to give a credit card address for sites that accept Paypal.

I've used it for years. When I'm online shopping I try to only buy from sites that have Paypal. It's really fast and I've never had a problem with security.

I am aware of 1 scam. A friend of mine recently advertised a nearly new car for sale and was contacted by someone via email who said he was on a ship and really interested in the car and if she supplied a paypal address he would transfer the money and get a friend to collect the car. She was suspicious and asked for my advice. I asked the good folks on Facebook and was told about the scam and given links. Apparently they pay the paypal via credit card and after the car is collected they complain to their credit card company and the monies are recalled. Well.... Not sure if this thread was really serious, BUT:
As a private person, using it to pay now and then PayPal is ok.
As a reliable payment solution for an online business... No.
I use PayPal because I have to, but wouldn't rely solely on them, ever.
Too many businesses who did, has ended up bankrupt.
On more than one occasion I've lost thousands due to their incompetence...
Only one time did they actually compensate me, 1000 pounds when I had lost 5 times as much...
And you never know when they're going to suspend your account, for the most outrageous reasons... They always suspend FIRST, and ask questions later... Never the opposite.
But I've used them for 8 years, and 100's of 1000's of transactions.

I use paypal for ebay and never had any problems. One thing to be aware of though is sometimes you may get emails in spam saying it is from paypal and they want you to update your credit card details. This is a scam for someone else to get hold of your card number, so do not reply to anything that goes in to your spam in email.

I've used pay pal to pay in the UK for Monarch flights ( when they are advertising no fees), purchases off ebay and buying wifi time when here in Tenerife. I have not had any problems. I did exceed the amount paypal allowed for credit card purchases in a year (about £1,000)and had to then register my bank debit card, but at check out I always choose the credit card payment option not my debit card. I have not used it for incoming payments

the one thing thats bad about Paypal ? . . . . . . . . they're owned by eBay !

I've used Paypal for 7 years, both personal and business , and the only time they let you down is as a seller NOT buyer.

If a customer has ANY problem, real or made up, Paypal always sides with them

A common con is to order, pay, complain , get a refund !

BUT ,they're like Ryanair, follow their rules and you'll be OK. Always post items recorded delivery or via they're own postal service, as customers have a habit of saying their purchase never arrived !

Oh. and empty the account on a regular basis - they'll refund like a shot if you have funds, maybe not if you don't !

Good advice indeed. My son-in-law sold an item on ebay and sent it by reg post to France. They claimed to have not received it so his account was deducted. A month later same item was being sold on ebay by person who 'never recieved it'. Son in law is still arguing with ebay a year later..........SELLER BEWARE!

but usually registered proof is a good reason for Paypal to take your side ! As long as you go through their long winded process of submitting the information

except the fees !!

if your a business with high turnover via Paypal, you can negotiate better terms with them. For a few months I sold stock at a value of £10k a month for several months and got their fees reduced to 1.5% !!!!

My business has it's own paypal account manager. Any problems at all and we can call and speak to someone who can solve the issue. Loads of nightmare stories on the net about them but to be fair to paypal all the problems we have ever had have been out of their control. I think you need to turnover a fair bit to have an account manager though so no use to personal users.

my only grief is the ammount of time they keep your money before paying it into your account. Normally it takes 21 working days to clear. I put €200 in on 11 April and it dropped in my account on the 5th May
