RICARDO Melchior, beloved former head of Tenerife Cabildo, was involved in a nasty car accident this week.
His vehicle overturned on the southbound part of the TF-1 in Arico, and he had to be cut free by firefighters.
He suffered trauma to his leg and his hand and was hospitalised overnight on Tuesday at the UHC (University hospital). The 68-year-old was assessed in the morning and then taken to surgery.
It is understood that the ex-President required surgery to repair damaged ankle tendons in his ankle, and he is expected to be in hospital for a few days.
A statement issued on his behalf thanked the emergency services, ambulance and hospital staff for their efforts. He is said to be in good spirits, but remembers little of the accident.
Melchior’s accident was the culmination of a new black day for Tenerife’s roads. Appalling weather on Tuesday caused a plethora of traffic problems.
Heavy morning rain caused chaos on the section of the TF-5 between La Matanza and Puerto de la Cruz. There were multiple accidents caused by poor visibility through fog, and a slippery road surface.
Police said there were three major accidents in which at least 10 vehicles were involved. Thankfully, there were no fatalities, but there were a few broken bones.
Later in the day, there was another sickening crash on the TF-5 which saw four people hospitalised, one of them seriously, after an overturned car collide with another vehicle.
Melchior was President of the Tenerife Cabildo from 1999 until he retired in 2013. He never lost an election and was respected and admired on all sides of the political spectrum in Tenerife.
Recently, he spoke of how much he was enjoying his retirement, even though he was still doing some “advising” for various politicians.
