THE European Foundation for Environmental Education issues its prized Blue Flags for the continent`s very best beaches every year – and there are will be some long faces in Arona.
This year, 46 blue flags have been awarded to Canarian beaches, which is two fewer than in 2014. Tenerife has 13 flags, which is also two fewer – and Arona has lost out again!
Nationally, 577 Spanish beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag, which is a record. Spain also has more Blue Flags than any other nation.
Tenerife’s winners were Real Club Nautico in Santa Cruz, San Telmo and Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz, Playa San Juan in Guía de Isora, El Médano, Playa La Arena, Los Gigantes sports harbour in Santiago del Teide, La Laguna’s Bajamar pools, El Socorro in Los Realejos, Playa del Troya beaches 1 & 2, Torviscas, Fanabe, and El Duque beach.
Special mention must go to Playa La Arena’s flag, which will be unfurled for a 28th consecutive year.
