THE National Police have made a stunning discovery in a Tenerife home. A major inter-continent police operation has led to the arrest of a man, and the recovery of 50 pieces of art stolen from churches in Sweden.
Along with the valuable paintings, officers also recovered an 18th Century bible, and four wooden carvings of great historical value from the 15th Century.
The operation was conducted by the National Police, in collaboration with their Swedish, German and Danish counterparts.
Apparently the man, of Spanish nationality and said to be 63, was a well-known art thief. He had already served five years in Sweden for various robberies.
The person, as yet unnamed, is well known as a “plunderer of Swedish churches”, as local police have described him, and he will also be questioned over the theft of dozens of pieces of art from Tenerife churches.
It ’s believed that when police searched the home of the suspect, a total of 43 objects of Swedish art were recovered, including candlesticks, and wooden ornaments.
Among the items seized were four wood carvings from the 15 Century, a wooden chest and an undated, but very old, canvas.
This operation made it possible as well to recovery four wooden carvings in Madrid, which were also stolen from Sweden and sold through an auction house in the capital.
In addition, a storeroom owned by the suspect was found in Denmark and several objects were recovered.
And in another lock-up, more stolen carvings and religious objects from Swedish churches and chapels were recovered.
