TENERIFE South airport could hit its passenger limit in just a few years, according to research conducted by the University of La Laguna (ULL) at the request of the Cabildo.
The Reina Sofia airport could soon he handling 10 million passengers a year, which is maximum set out by AENA, the Spanish airports’ authority.
The report concludes that growth of visitors, and air routes covered by the airfield, could see the maximum reached as early as 2018 – and in the worst case, in 2021.
This means the current terminal will be saturated inside a maximum of six years.
It is good news and bad news for the Cabildo because any new airport infrastructure could take up to 10 years to implement fully.
The local government has been urging AENA to plan an extension of the South airport for some time.
The findings were revealed by the Cabildo’s Tourism and Strategic Projects Councillor Miguel Becerra.
He said the ULL had already presented the study’s first conclusions, which will be broadened soon, in order to transfer it to AENA in an effort to support the expansion demands. A meeting is planned, but a date has not yet been set.
Under the terms of AENA’s recent privatisation, there is a limit to the annual amount dedicated to investment.
That adds up to 450 million euros for all Spanish airports, which concerns Becerra. “If we plan a new terminal now, it could be gradually financed,” he said. “But if we wait, the limit could make the development of Reina Sofia airport impossible.”
