THE Entomology Research Group of Tenerife (GIET) has discovered a new species of beetle!
The GIET is funded by the Canary Islands Government and, thanks to this grant, they study the wildlife inhabiting Teide National Park’s underground.
The group’s recent findings have thrown up some exciting results. Along with the confirmed beetle species, researchers believe they have also found another three new species: a cockroach, a spider and a centipede.
They discovered a new species of Coleoptera (beetle), which is totally blind and de-pigmented.
It was found in a Teide Park cave, where the three possible new species were also discovered. According to the researchers, “these findings show the need to further explore the depths of the National Park”.
Luis Perera, Deputy Mayor of La Orotava, said: “The objective now is to make publications on these important studies – one scientific and the other informative – since the primary purpose is to extend knowledge of them to favour more the protection, and involve the people in the park’s conservation.”
The park’s researched underground area is throwing up lots of new questions. The area’s unique system of volcanic tubes leads to a fascinating habitat for species and fauna,.
That’s because they have to adapt to special conditions such as lack of light, high humidity, constant temperature changes and, above all, lack of food resources.
