THERE is finally some good news surrounding the Russian fishing boat Oleg Naydenov, which sunk after catching fire a few weeks ago off the coast of Gran Canaria and threatened a huge oil spill in the Canaries.
Experts have been able to seal a hole which had been spewing oil and fuel into the Atlantic.
According to the Ministry of Development, a steel coffer or a “coffer-dam” has been placed in the area which saw the fuel seepage in an operation carried out by underwater robots.
Also, the Sea Rescue Centre in Las Palmas continues to co-ordinate the integrated hydrocarbons security and cleaning operation, which is being implemented with help from the Canary Islands Government and the Red Cross.
The Miguel de Cervantes continues to work in the area, performing surveillance tasks and liaising with the Sasemar aircraft to watch the flow of the spillage, which is still parallel with the south of Gran Canaria.
It is currently occupying its smallest area, thanks to the ships the Luz de Mar and Punta Salinas, which have been working on the dispersion and collection of the hydrocarbon residues.
Despite the positive news, though, there are still wildlife casualties. On Monday two turtles were recovered, one dead, and a shearwater bird was also collected.
They are being treated at the wildlife centres of Taliarte and Tafira.
